The Three Gorges Dam

三峽大壩

The Three Gorges Dam is not only the largest dam but also the largest engineering project(工程項(xiàng)目) on the earth. It aims to control the floods brought by the Yangtze River, and to produce power(電力) of 181,200 megawatts(兆瓦) for Eastern and Central China. It will form a huge, deep water lake, and make it possible for 10,000-ton oceaning-going ships to go straight from Shanghai to Chongqing, one of the worlds largest inland ports(港口).

The dam will be about 6,860 feet wide and 611 feet high, at a place called Sandouping near Yichang when it finishes in 2009.

It is clear that such a great project will do much good. However, some scientists dont agree. They say that it will affect the ecological(生態(tài)的) environment of the Yangtze River, and the river bed will become worse because of the sand from upstream (上游) and also there may be earthquakes in the Three Gorges area when the dam begins to hold water.

An Interesting Game

This is a game for two players. All you need are four pieces of squared paper and a pencil. Each player has two pieces of paper. On each piece of paper labels twelve squares along the top, A to L, and twelve squares down the side, 1 to 12. These pieces of paper represent the ocean.

On one of their pieces of paper, both players mark out six ships each on their grid(柵格), for example, one battleship, two destroyers (驅(qū)逐艦) and three submarines(潛艇). Five squares can be used for a battleship, three squares for a destroyer and two squares for a submarine. The fleet(艦隊(duì)) can be arranged anywhere on the ocean—just make sure your opponent(對(duì)手) cant see where your ships are!

The second piece of paper is used as a spare grid to record a plays shots. One player starts the game by firing the first shot(saying, for example, I am firing at H8), naming a square that might be occupied by a ship of his opponents fleet. He then marks down the shot(射擊) he has made on his spare piece of paper so that he doesnt aim at that square again and waste a shot.

The other player then has to tell him whether he has made a hit(擊中) and crosses off (劃去) the square if a hit has been made. He does not need to tell his opponent which of his ships has been damaged. Then the second player has a turn to fire his gun in the same way. The game continues with each player taking it in turns to have a shot.

A ship is sunk when each square of the ship has been hit by the other player. The winner is the first player to sink the whole of his opponents fleet.
