The ambitious redevelopment of San Francisco's landmark Emporium Building has evolved into one the most significant urban mixed-use projects under development in the United States. The Westfield San Francisco Centre merges the site of the old Emporium Building and its preserved century-old Market Street fa?ade-to be anchored by Bloomingdale's-with the adjacent San Francisco Shopping Centre-anchored by Nordstrom-into a destination that will be the finest urban shopping experience in San Francisco.

By adding nearly one million SF to the site's existing 500,000 SF of retail offerings, the WSFC will become the largest urban shopping center west of the Mississippi, occupied by both Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom's second largest grossing locations nationwide.Added to the mix are 200 exclusive boutiques and specialty stores,first-class office space,a state-of-the-art nine-screen cinema, and fine restaurants.
The WSFC's central downtown location-above the city's busiest BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station and a few blocks south of the newly refurbished Union Square-will link the heart-and-soul of San Francisco's fashion district with Yerba Buena, the center of the city's cultural district and home to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Metreon, a cutting-edge entertainment center. This exciting confluence of elements is expected to annually attract over 25 million shoppers.

Bloomingdale's will occupy the new building's first five levels.Three stories of office space and the cinema are above. The design connects Bloomingdale's fifth floor to the first floor of Nordstrom, which occupies the top five levels of the nine-story San Francisco Shopping Centre.
The project's vertical orientation poses challenges for retail planners and project designers to encourage customers to look upward and enjoy all of the retail, dining, and entertainment offerings.A sequence of cascading escalators will move customers and tenants through grand atrium spaces, dynamic retail districts and interior halls that preserve a pedestrian scale and proportion. Facing Mission Street, on the project's south side, Bloomingdale's will be an illuminated glass box, merging notions of the interior and exterior and creating a retail environment that engages shoppers and passerby from every vantage point.
The Market Street entry, restored to its historic early-1900's appearance, serves as a gateway to eight levels of shopping, entertainment, dining and office suites. The building's signature glass dome-102 feet in diameter-was raised 54 feet to provide a more open, shared sense of public space and to improve efficiency in the retail levels.
The design is a balance of modernism and the original building's Beaux-Arts classicism, a unique confluence of crisp, high-end finishes characteristic of a contemporary approach with details and symmetry that exemplify the building's historic ornamentation. Sleek materials-such as steel, glass and granite-are juxtaposed with the elaborate detailing of the Market Street fa?ade to achieve harmony between old and new. The result is a striking expression of 20th and 21st century architectural design.
