The historic Leipzig Main Railway Station was created in 1907 according to plans by the architects Lossow and Kühne from a competition entitled“Passenger Railway Station and Dead-End Station”.It is one of the most important buildings in Leipzig. At its inauguration in 1915, it was the largest railway station in Europe.During World War II, it was considerably damaged by bombing raids. Reconstruction began in 1948, and was completed in 1965.
The intention of Bahnhof Management und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH, Frankfurt, to make the Leipzig Railway Station the centre of urban life again was the basis of a large open architectural competition entitled“Redevelopment of the Leipzig Railway Station”,for which HPP was awarded first prize in 1994 from among 30 competitors, and immediately afterwards was commissioned with the realization of the project.

Leipzig Railway Station, Europe's largest dead-end station, was redeveloped as a pilot project under the name “Service Centre in the Terminal Building.”The fascination with large transverse roofed platforms of 270 m in length continues. The design was limited to using the existing building: A lens-shaped opening in the transverse platform became the formal and functional spatial connecting element in the transverse platform, while respecting the historical structure of the building.
On three levels of the transverse platform, which also are referred to as promenade decks, around 140 businesses, cafes, and restaurants with 17,500 sqm floor space were created, which are all interconnected with generously designed stairs, lifts, pedestrian conveyors and escalators. The platform thus has the character of a galleria, giving the rail traveller a new concept of rail and travel breaks. The vertical connection between the levels is provided by two glass lift towers that extend into the transverse platform.
On 12 November 1997,Leipzig Railway Station was opened as a pilot project of Deutsche Bahn AG and designated for its operation.
