On May 11, 2005, Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan met with Alexander Haig, former US Secretary of State, and George David, chairman of the Board of Directors of the United Technologies Corporation (UTC) in Zhongnanhai. Zhang Guobao, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, Qiao Zonghuai, leading official of the Foreign Ministry, and Li Xiaolin, vice president of the CPAFFC, were present at the meeting.
On Sino-US Relations
Mr. Haig expressed his admiration for the achievements China has made under the new leadership and belief that during the second term of the Bush Administration with the joint efforts of the leaders of the two countries, Sino-US relations will further develop. He held that persistence and patience are the two most important factors in improving US-China relations.
Chairman David said, UTC will give full play to its advantages, further promote US-China economic and trade cooperation and do more work to help US congressmen have a better understanding of China so as to maintain the overall situation of US-China economic and trade cooperation.
Vice Premier Zeng said, with concerted efforts of the two sides, in recent years Sino-US relations, on the whole, have experienced a steady and positive development. Currently, there exists an imbalance in Sino-US economic and trade relations. China will try hard to expand imports from the United State, which is also needed for China’s economic development. Sino-US economic and trade relations should be mutually beneficial and win-win. The development of UTC’s business in China has proved it. Vice Premier Zeng spoke highly of the contributions made by Mr. Haig and Mr. George David to promoting the development of Sino-US relations, and particularly the economic and trade relations.
Cooperation between UTC and China
Chairman David expressed his full satisfaction with the development of UTC’s business in China. He said, so far, UTC has set up 14 factories with over 14,000 employees in China. The Corporation is now one of the major suppliers of engines used in civil airplanes to China, and the lifts and elevators produced by UTC account for over 30 percent of China’s lift and elevator market.
He said, during the course of cooperation between UTC and the Chinese side, the importance attached by the relevant Chinese government departments to environmental protection and energy saving has left deep impressions on him. He suggested that the two sides carry out cooperation in development and use of energy-saving products and fuel cells.
Vice Premier Zeng said, China’s economic development is still on the ascendant stage. Market demand is continuously expanding due to the improvement of people’s livelihood. As a result, this growing momentum will, perhaps, maintain for quite a long time. In recent years, the number of civil airplanes purchased by China has kept a double-digit growth rate each year, which will definitely result in a rapid increase of demand of airplane engines. A large number of lifts and air-conditioners will be needed for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai World Exposition. Thus, UTC has a bright prospect of development in China.
Zeng also expressed his agreement to the suggestions put forward by George David. He said, since reform and opening up, China’s economic aggregate quantity has been continuously increasing. If the economy continues to be developed in the past extensive way, China’s resources will be drained up. Thus, the Chinese Government has laid out the principle of developing economy in a scientific, economical, energy-saving and safe way, and this important guiding thinking will be incorporated in the 11th Five-Year Plan which is being drafted and in the future long-time development plan. Zeng hoped that UTC would discuss with relevant Chinese departments to strengthen cooperation so as to achieve results as soon as possible.
