The men of influence in our lives are usually our fathers, brothers, grandfathers, uncles, and friends and they play an important role in our lives. They lead by example, teaching us how to move physically through our world, how to be strong in the face of adversity (逆境), how to be wise, and how to provide for ourselves and our families.

My dad taught me how to have natural fun, playing baseball in his stocking feet. Today my dad continues to influence me in positive ways. He has faced a challenging health problem over the past few months and has carried on with his life in much the same way as he did before his illness, going about his daily business a bit slower and needing to take more rests but still living his life the way he wishes to.

My grandfather taught me the value of being trusted. My father-in-law influenced my life in a different way. He was quiet, loving and a man of power. When he spoke, I listened, as he did not speak unless he had something to say.

My loving husband has encouraged me to be strong and independent, to think for myself, and not to look to him for permission. My husband has also taught me to adapt with him to the ever-changing reality of his journey with illness, and he has met each one with courage and dignity (尊嚴(yán)).

I have learned much from the men who have had an influence on my life. For all that I have learned and for the role they played and continue to play in my life, I am forever thankful.

24. What can we learn about the author’s father?

A. His life has completely changed. B. His business is in difficulty.

C. He needs to rest most of the day. D. He has something wrong with his body.

25. Who encouraged the author to win the trust of others?

A. Her father. B. Her husband. C. Her grandfather. D. Her father-in-law.

26. Which word best describes the author’s husband?

A. Lonely. B. Brave. C. Talkative. D. Quiet.

27. What does the text mainly talk about?

A. The influence of men. B. The advantages of men.

C. Holiday greetings. D. Women’s source of support.

A new study proves when teenagers cut back on social media use, they seem to feel better about themselves. Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University, conducted the study. She said the research came from her own personal experiences. “I couldn’t help but compare myself with others when I was using social media, making me unsatisfied with my self-image,” Thai says. Although she was aware that social media posts often presented images that could be unrealistic in real life, it still had a negative impact on her. So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reduced time on social media would increase self-confidence in body image.

They found a few hundred volunteers, aged 14—18, all of whom had experienced signs of anxiety or depression (抑郁), which could make them easier to be affected by social media. Half of the teens were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media freely, which averaged about three hours per day. The researchers gave the teens surveys at the beginning and end of the study. It included statements such as “I’m pretty happy about the way I look” and “I am satisfied with my weight”.

Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance satisfaction improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5-point scale. “This may seem like a small change, but any change in such a short period of time is striking,” the authors say.

“This research showed promising results that weight and appearance confidence can improve when people cut back on social media use,” wrote Thai. Thai says it’s encouraging that teens were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks. It’s also worth experimenting (試驗) this approach with other groups, such as people with or at risk of eating disorders.

28. What inspired Thai to do the research?

A. Her course. B. Online posts. C. Her experiences. D. Social pressure.

29. All the volunteers have .

A. similar family backgrounds B. emotional problems

C. similar learning abilities D. communication problems

30. What did Thai think of the result of the study?

A. It proved their expectation. B. It made them disappointed.

C. It changed their first idea. D. It needed further study.

31. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Higher Confidence, More Image Satisfaction B. Less Social Media Use, Less Image Anxiety

C. To Be a Social Media Addict or Not D. Social Media, Love at First Sight

D

Regularly practicing facial “yoga”, or exercises for your facial muscles (肌肉), may actually make you look younger, early research suggests.

In a small, new study, researchers taught 27 middle-aged women (aged 40 to 65) how to perform 32 facial exercises, which included simple actions such as smiling in the cheeks. After this training, the participants performed these exercises at home for 30 minutes a day, every day for eight weeks. On the ninth week of the study, the participants reduced the frequency of their 30-minute exercise routine to every other day (three to four days a week), and continued the exercise for 20 weeks.

The participants also had their photos taken at the beginning and end of the study, and several doctors rated these photos using a standard method for assessing (評估) the appearance of aging in the face and neck. The raters, who didn’t know which photos were taken before and which photos were taken after the exercises, also estimated (估計) the age of the person in the photo.

After 20 weeks, the participants had better ratings for the fullness of their cheeks, on average, compared with their ratings at the start of the study. In other words, their cheeks looked fuller after their 20-week facial exercises. This change in cheek fullness also made the participants look younger: Raters estimated that the participants looked nearly three years younger after the exercises, compared with before.

However, the findings are preliminary and should be confirmed with a larger study, the researchers said. And many questions remain about exactly which exercises are beneficial and who might benefit from them. “The study involved the middle-aged, mainly white women, who stayed in the study for 20 weeks, so it’s not known whether the effects seen in the study would apply to men, or to people of other ages or races. It’s also not clear how long people need to perform the exercises in order to see benefits,” lead study author Dr Murad Alam said.

32. What did the researchers first do to the participants in the study?

A. They trained them. B. They took photos of them.

C. They divided them into groups. D. They checked the faces of them.

33. What was the participants’ specific change according to the study?

A. They looked healthier. B. They got fuller facial outline.

C. They became interested in facial exercises. D. They smiled more often.

34. What does the underlined word “confirmed” in the last paragraph mean?

A. Proved. B. Questioned. C. Challenged. D. Affected.

35. What can be inferred from Alam’s words in the last paragraph?

A. More facial exercises will be performed. B. More middle-aged women will join in the study.

C. Men participants will appear in later studies. D. 20 weeks is enough to test if an exercise works.
