Wendy Bennett was appointed executive director of AgSafe four years ago. Initially, she was unsure she had the skills and abilities needed to do the job. “There was nothing short of terror,” she said. “I certainly didnt have the educational background for it, although I have a good education.”

Whale researchers believe they have found a new way to measure the amount of stress felt by whales when they experience serious threats, such as being hit by a ship, and they say the technique could help protect the huge sea creatures from dying off.

American Rosalind Rolland is the lead scientist on the project. She and her team are with the New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts. They measured stress hormones (激素) by studying baleen, a substance found in the upper part of the mouth of some kinds of whales. She explains that the baleen serves as a record that shows a spike in stress hormones when whales face dangers such as a changing climate and ship strikes. Scientists can then read these records, similar to reading the tree rings.

Understanding the information is important because whales that often feel stressed are less likely to be reproductive and more likely to become sick. That combination is not good for the whale population, which is already dangerously low.

The scientists did their work on a whale that had become trapped in fishing equipment, which some scientists estimate kills up to 300,000 whales and dolphins annually. It was finally killed by Inuit hunters who found it trying to escape from the fishing equipment. The hunters said the whale seemed to lack energy. Detecting drugs used to be a specific job for dogs, but now a drug detection team is welcoming some new colleagues—squirrels. Six Eurasian red squirrels were trained and approved for work responsibilities by police in Chongqing.

Squirrels have an acute sense of smell as they can smell food under a foot of snow. Small and swift, the “newcomers” are able to search for drugs in places which may be unapproachable for dogs, such as narrow spaces or tops of packages stacked high in warehouses. The squirrels have been trained to use their claws to scratch (撓) at boxes to draw their handlers attention if they detect drugs, according to local Chongqing police authorities.

“Our self-developed training system can be applied to the training of various animals,” Yin Jin, a police dog handler in Chongqing, told Global Times, adding that the training has really impressive results as the squirrels can quickly identify drugs. Although the system is intended for dogs, it can show some evidence on how squirrels are trained as well.

According to a research essay published in the journal China Working Dog which details the program, conditioning the animals reflexes (反射) is the key factor. First, the animals are familiarized with the targets smell and do special gestures when they smell their targets. For example, for explosive detection dogs, the handlers place pieces of cloth with the smell of the explosives next to the dogs food.

Next, the animals learn to search for the targets under various conditions. From a large number of luggage bags to people walking in crowds, the handlers create different scenarios (情景) to test the animals. If the animals successfully identify the location of the targets, they are then rewarded with snacks or other treats. The animals are soon able to search for targets naturally and actively, showing that the conditioned reflex has been built internally. Their training ends with practice sessions in real-life scenarios.
