For Canaan Elementarys second grade in Patchogue, New York, today is speech day, and right now its Chris Palaezs turn. The 8-year-old is the joker of the class. With shining dark eyes, he seems like the kind of kid who would enjoy public speaking.

But hes nervous. “Im here to tell you today why you should... should...” Chris trips on the “-ld”, a pronunciation difficulty for many non-native English speakers. His teacher, Thomas Whaley, is next to him, whispering support. “... Vote for... Me...” Except for some stumbles, Chris is doing amazingly well. When he brings his speech to a nice conclusion, Whaley invites the rest of the class to praise him.

A son of immigrants (移民), Chris started learning English a little over three years ago. Whaley recalls? how at the beginning of the year, when called upon to read, Chris would excuse himself to go to the bathroom.

Learning English as a second language can be a painful experience. What you need is a great teacher who lets you make mistakes. “‘It takes a lot for any student, Whaley explains, especially for a student who is learning English as their new language, to feel confident enough to say, ‘I dont know, but I want to know.”

Whaley got the idea of this second-grade presidential campaign project when he asked the children one day to raise their hands if they thought they could never be a president. The answer broke his heart. Whaley says the project is about more than just learning to read and speak in public. He wants these kids to learn to boast (夸耀) about themselves.

“Boasting about yourself, and your best qualities,” Whaley says, “is very difficult for a child who came into the classroom not feeling confident.”

The early life of the green sea turtle is full of danger. Only one in 1,000 baby sea turtles survive to adulthood. From its home in the sand, it breaks its egg with an egg tooth. Its mother is not there to help it. Instead, it is greeted by crabs, coyotes, and dogs waiting to eat it for dinner. To survive, the baby turtle must hide in the sand until night. Then, it moves slowly to the sea.

The small turtle must swim hard to reach the ocean waters. In the sea, it tries hard to find food. It must also keep itself from being food for fish.

As dangerous as the sea turtles life is in the natural world, its most dangerous enemies are humans. The rubbish left by humans in the ocean causes problems for the small green sea turtle. A little turtle might eat a piece of plastic in the sea. It might also eat oil on the oceans surface. Young turtles also get caught in fishing nets. There are laws against hunting sea turtles. Still, many are hunted, both for their meat and for their shells. All of these dangers must be prevented.

Sea turtles that do survive to grow into adulthood go through many changes. For example, adult green sea turtles weigh about 500 pounds. They stop eating jellyfish and other meat and eat only plants. And they may plan a trip to go back home again. A mother sea turtle goes back to the beach where she was born. This is the only place where she will lay eggs. Even if it has been forty years since she was a baby, she always knows her way back home.

28. Why do baby turtles move to the sea at night?

A. They dislike sunshine. B. They need to avoid enemies.

C. They can find food easily then. D. They prefer lower temperatures.

29. What does the author think of the young turtles in Paragraph 3?

A. Pitiful. B. Careless. C. Interesting. D. Courageous.

30. What can we learn about sea turtles from the last paragraph?

A. They mainly feed on fish and meat. B. They can live for about 40 years.

C. They produce eggs at their birthplaces. D. They visit their beach homes every year.

31. What is the text mainly about?

A. The homes of green sea turtles. B. How sea turtles find their food.

C. The dangers faced by sea turtles. D. How young turtles become adults.

A robot created by Washington State University (WSU) scientists could help elderly people with Alzheimers Disease (阿爾茨海默病) and other limitations live independently in their own homes.

The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, uses sensors (傳感器) installed in a WSU smart home to determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities. It navigates (定位) through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own, provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owner to objects like their medicine or a snack in the kitchen.

“RAS combines the convenience of a mobile robot with the activity detection (探測) technology of a WSU smart home to provide assistance in the moment, as the need for help is detected,” said Bryan Minor, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Currently, an estimated 50 percent of adults over the age of 85 need assistance with everyday activities such as preparing meals and taking medicine and the annual cost for this assistance in the US is nearly $2 trillion. Researchers hope that technologies like RAS and the WSU smart home will make it easier for older adults to live alone.

RAS is the first robot researchers have tried to include into their smart home environment. They recently published a study in the journal Cognitive Systems Research that demonstrates how RAS could make life easier for older adults struggling to live independently.

“While we are still in an early stage of development, our initial results with RAS have been promising,” Minor said. “The next step in the research will be to test RAS performance with a group of older adults to get a better idea of what prompts, video reminders and other preferences they have regarding the robot.”

32. How does RAS serve elderly people?

A. Through sensors.? ? ? ? ? ? ? B. Through smart objects.

C. Through a mobile robot.? ? ? ? ? ? ? D. Through a detection system.

33. What can we learn about RAS?

A. It is the first robot used in daily life.? ? ? B. Its function remains to be tested.

C. It can locate people and do complex tasks.? ? ? D. Its users are those over 85.

34. What is Minors attitude toward the future of RAS?

A. Doubtful. B Negative. C. Positive. D. Uncertain.

35. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Elderly People Leave the Nursing Home B. Older Adults Will Benefit from RAS

C. RAS, the First Robot to Make Home Smart D. WSU Tests First Elder-Care Robot
