麗江古城的三大組成部分順應山川和水源地的自然地貌，充分展現了不同時期的社會、經濟和文化特點，形成了一個融納西、漢、白、藏等民族民居傳統為一體的聚落。

麗江古城將山川、河流、樹木、建筑融為一體，營造出人與自然和諧統一的人居環境。古城北以綿延的山脈為屏障，東、南則以廣袤的壩子為屏障，構造出良好的幾何關系和生態布局。發源于雪山的分叉水系，流經每一片村莊和農田。黑龍潭與星羅棋布的水井和泉水構成了完整的水系，可滿足古城消防、生活和生產的用水需求。水在老城區獨特的建筑風格、城市布局和景觀中占有重要的地位。無論主街還是小巷，均面朝運河，還有一些建筑和眾多橋梁橫跨其上。麗江古城是人類與自然和諧共處的人類生境典范，也是人類創造性利用土地的典型例子。

自12世紀以來，麗江古城一直是川、滇、藏貿易的重要貨物集散地，也是南方絲綢之路與茶馬古道的交會處。麗江古城因此成為納西、漢、白、藏等各民族經濟文化交流的重要中心。800多年的文化和科技交流，以及漢、白、藏等民族精髓的融合，形成了當地獨特的建筑、藝術、城市規劃、景觀、社會生活、風俗習慣、工藝美術和其他文化特色，同時呈現出鮮明的納西族特色。
