What is Thanksgiving Day？

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated（慶祝） mainly（主要的） in Canada and the United States. It was originally（最初，開始） celebrated as a day of giving thanks for the blessing（感恩禱告） of the harvest（收獲） and of the preceding（在前的，在先的） year.

Since Thanksgiving started as a harvest celebration， its no wonder that food plays an important part. It is said that there is more food consumed（消耗，消費） during Thanksgiving than Christmas. Roast turkey（烤火雞） is the must-have dish， and for dessert（甜點）， pumpkin pies are served.

The president of the United States traditionally（傳統上） “pardons（原諒，寬恕）” one lucky turkey each year just before Thanksgiving holiday. The chosen one is spared（被放過，被饒恕） from the oven and is given freedom to enjoy the rest of its life in the wild.
