The Tokyo Olympics has once again brought an 81-year-old grandpa, with a relentless (不懈的) passion for running the 400 meters, into the center of public attention. Coming from Xi'an, capital city of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the senior inspires countless youngsters with his perseverance.

Huang Xujin is serious about running, a hobby he has developed for more than a decade.It usually takes him around40minutes to warm up before he readies his stopwatch and stands on the track.Huang has managed to beat his own personal best by running 400 meters in one minute and 31 seconds—a“ceiling”speed for elders. Even college students can hardly match his speed. The video of Huang's running was a hit on the campus,which inspired many students to exercise.

The self-disciplined runner has a strict set of rules for training. He keeps detailed records of his speed and sets targets for himself.His standard is:within 1′30"is excellent,within 1′32"is good,within 1′34" is a pass and over 1′34" is a failure. He trains three times a week except on rainy and hot days,and usually runs at noon,a time when most people are not on the track.He carries his notebook to mark the scores, red color for satisfactory attempts. Huang has been fond of running since a young age.When he was 16 years old,he had the chance to take part in the 1st National Youth Games representing Shaanxi Province. Though the scores of his long jump weren't as good as expected, he took advantage of the experience, meeting many talented athletes,and broadening his horizons.In later years,the workload of his job didn't stop Huang—he routinely went for morning runs as well as participated in various races held in Xi'an.
