“Rosie the Riveter(鉚工)”is the name of a fictional character who came to symbolize the millions of real women who filled Americas factories during World WarⅡ.

After the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941,the male workforce was called to fill the ranks of the U.S. military. The U.S. government conducted extensive campaigns to encourage women to join the workforce.

Saturday Evening Posts cover artist,Norman Rockwell,is generally credited with creating one of the popular“Rosie the Riveter”images used to encourage women to become wartime workers. Rockwells image features a strong woman taking her lunch break with a rivet gun on her lap. Her lunch box reads“Rosie”. Rockwells“Rosie”poster appeared on the cover of the May 29th,1943 edition of the Post, which was then one of the nations most popular magazines. In addition to Rockwells“Rosie”,however, another image was to become the more commonly known“Rosie the Riveter”image.

In 1942,J. Howard Miller was hired by the Westinghouse Company to create a series of posters to moti-vate female employees. One of these posters became the famous“We Can Do It!”image—an image that in later years would also become known by many as“Rosie the Riveter”. The poster used exclusively within Westinghouse factories was only displayed for two weeks in February 1943. It was only in 1982—some 40 years later—that this image began to be associated with“Rosie the Riveter”.

Both images—RockwellsandMillers—were used to help motivate the World WarⅡworkforce, but in Millers case, perhaps only at Westinghouse factories. And in later years,up to the present time, both of the images have become iconic(偶像的)symbols of womens struggles for rights and are occasionally adapted for other causes and political campaigns as well.

The bike-sharing craze in China five years ago sucked in billions of dollars of investorscash and clientsdeposits that start-ups spent on millions of new bikes in an effort to grab market share. When the inevitable collapse came, most of the companies went bankrupt(破產(chǎn)),leaving city authorities having to pay to clean up the mess.

The sheer volume of abandoned bikes is overwhelming.Xiaoming, just one of the 60 or so bike-sharing app companies that closed down, left 430,000 of them across more than 10 cities.

No one wants to pay for it.The bankrupt companies are gone, mostly unable to even return customersdeposits. The investments have never been got back,so the taxpayer has to pay the bill.It costs 9.6 yuan to remove each abandoned bike from the street, according to the government in Hangzhou.

Also, safety rules mean that even the remaining players have to replace their vehicles every few years. And they have vowed to be responsible for the“whole lifecycle”of their vehicles.Mobike and YUUE discovered that disassembled(拆開的)frames and parts make interesting designer chairs and lamps.Mobike also turned the rubber from 7,800 old tires into the surface for a running track in a town in Shaanxi Province.

“As a big internet company, its important to be both environment-friendly and user-friendly,”said Xie Peng, manager of the green supply chain department of Hellobike, one of the surviving companies.

Kids seem to spend endless hours on smartphones, computers and tablets these days. The best thing parents can do to prevent it is to encourage youngsters to spend more time outdoors in the sunlight.

There has been a massive rise around the globe in short-sightedness—or myopia as its officially known—over recent decades. Myopia or short-sightedness is becoming more common. Lack of natural light seems to be the key issue.“The main factor seems to be a lack of exposure to direct sunlight, because children who study a lot and who use computers or smartphones or tablet computers a lot have less opportunity to run around outside and are less exposed to sunshine and because of that children seem to be at more risk of developing short-sightedness.”

Professor Hammond says,“It may be that theres no coincidence that in East Asian countries, the most myopic ones all correlate with the maths league tables(排名表). These kids are being pushed with very intensive education from a very young age and spend a lot of time indoors studying. Therefore the concern is that all close work—like playing with the iPhone—carries the potential that it could make them more short-sighted.”

The best thing to do, the experts say, is to get children playing outside as much as possible. In a perfect world, probably on average across the week and the weekend, two hours a day outdoors can prevent children becoming short-sighted. Healthy diet is also important; get oily fish and green vegetables as much as possible.

“What we need to look at is ways of modifying the impact that these indoor activities have on their visual development,”Professor Hammond said.“There are eye drops and other treatments to slow myopia progression. But in terms of preventing myopia itself, there isnt any data out there at the moment in terms of the question‘Could the drops we use to slow progression stop myopia developing at all?”

32.What does the underlined word“that”in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Much natural light.

B.Running around outside.

C.A computer or a smartphone.

D.Less exposure to sunshine.

33.WhatdoesProfessorHammondthinkof short-sightedness among East Asian children?

A.It appears quite by chance.

B.It is not serious enough.

C.It largely relates to iPads or iPhones.

D.It has something to do with their study pressure.

34.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The myopic students will decrease in the future.

B.Researchers have found methods to reduce myopia.

C.Its still a hard job to control the childrens myopia.

D.Researchers neednt collect any more data on myopia.

35.What is the best title for the text?

A.Common troubles of students

B.Problems caused by short-sightedness

C.Stay outdoors more to keep good eyesight

D.The importance of protecting kids

Think like This When You Feel Stressed

Its a sweet opportunity. If you look on pressure as a threat, you are sure to be negatively impacted by its occurrence.36They look on it as a great chance. They will cherish(珍惜)the pressure moment and approach it with confidence and enthusiasm.

Ill get another chance. Under pressure, we often lose hope. We tend to distort(扭曲)the reality of the situation. One of the most common phrases is“the chance of a lifetime”, in which we tell ourselves,“I will never get an opportunity like this again, so I cant miss it.37”

Ill do my best. This is what people who do their best under pressure tell themselves when they are going into a pressure moment.38Because it prevents them from wasting valuable energy worrying over things they cant influence and promotes confidence at the same time. Focusing on doing your best keeps you at that moment and guides your behavior toward success.

39People who perform their best at pressure will reduce the significance of the upcoming pressure moment, so they feel less stressed. Whether its a sales call or an interview for their dream jobs, they are like winning athletes, and when asked how to handle the pressure of the big game, they responded,“Its just another game.”

I can control how I respond. People who do their best at a pressure moment focus on what they can control.40If you have an upcoming interview, dont worry about the other applicants. You cant control them. Practice how you will handle an unexpected problem.

A.Its no big deal.

B.It stops you paying attention to anxiety.

C.Instead, take care of your own business.

D.Remembering past success increases your confidence.

E.In fact, we have many chances to succeed in our lifetime.

F.But people who do their best in a pressure moment are different.

G.Focusing on doing your best quickly decreases pressure at that moment.

I felt51. Trying to smile away the tears, I decided to let my ribbon do the talking. I had worked particularly hard on my ribbon and it showed. On the first beat I knew it was to be52.
