Even so， the draw to keep parrots can be irresistible. Highly social and intelligent， the birds create meaningful， powerful bonds with their owners. Combine that with their ability to imitate human voices， and there is no doubt that parrots are the most popular pet birds on Earth.

Fear of judgment and competition as well as general anxiety hurts teenage girls very often. Thus， a group of 18 high school girls in Central Kentucky， US， gathered for the first meeting of the Girl Project a little more than a year ago. The project is an art program designed to improve the self-esteem of girls.

Funded by the Kentucky Foundation for Women， the Girl Project aims to make a fundamental positive impact on the lives of young women during a crucial stage of their development. It has tried to achieve that goal by inviting the girls—who were admitted through social media， theater contacts and schools—to creativity workshops and relationship-building exercises.

The participants spent one Saturday each month at the Girl Project.“We call each other sisters，”junior Mariah Mowbray said.“There are no cliques（小圈子）in the Girl Project.”In addition to discussing current events， the meetings include two-hour workshops led by guest artists from the community or around the nation. Mowbray says that the stories shared by the artists help the girls expand their ambitions and improve their confidence.

“Knowing how they got through some of the stuff that were dealing with is really helpful，”Mowbray said.“Its really inspiring to see what theyve made of themselves.”Mowbrays show deals with humorous and heavy material from the workshops and offers reflection on some disturbing statistics. For instance， 95percent of the 8 million Americans with eating disorders are girls and women ages12to25. Finally， the project ends with a play， written and performed by participants.

In an era of unpredictable weather and increasing flooding around the globe， urgent solutions are needed. Landscape architect Dr. Yu Kongjian thinks cities can do a better job of being less in disagreement with nature and their surrounding environments. In response， he advocates the creation of“sponge（海綿）cities”.

A sponge city is designed to absorb， clean and reuse rainfall. Unlike concrete pavements that separate water from the natural ecosystem， sponge cities take advantage of wetlands， green roofs or permeable（可透入的）pavements to absorb most water before it can flow into urban streets. In the past years， the model has gained huge support in China， and today Yu and his team have completed 500 sponge city projects in cities around the world.

Although the majority of sponge city projects draw from the same model， each project has a different focus， according to Yu. In Chinas northeastern city of Harbin， for example， Yu and his team revitalized（使恢復(fù)）a dy-ing wetland surrounded by roads and big development projects in the citys center. Using a cut-and-fill way to create ponds and mud flats around the existing wetland， his team transformed the area into a landscape that lives in harmony with its surroundings and can solve urban flooding problems， as well as increasing biodiversity.

Dr. Yus sponge city concept challenges us to rethink our relationship with nature. And he hopes that sponge cities can have a much-needed impact in developing countries， especially in Southeast Asia where flooding is more frequent partly because of seasonal heavy rain and the regions tropical climate.
