She was walking home from work one evening when she got the idea. Rosa didnt like her job at the factory, but it was better than no job at all. While she was trying not to think about work, she saw the pots in an alley (小巷). They were cheap plastic pots, but there were dozens of them behind the flower shop. Such a waste, she thought. When the pots were still there three days later, Rosa went in and asked if she could take some. The flower shop lady said she didnt mind, so Rosa carried home a tower of pots as a circus (馬戲團(tuán)) performer on the way.

At home, Rosa set them on the fire escape (防火梯) outside her tiny apartment. And there they sat. Once a gust (一陣) of wind sent them slipping to the street three floors below, and she had to go to run after and catch them before the gathering storm.

A hardware store had a sale on potting soil. Rosa carefully counted her money, then walked six blocks to the store. She bought six bags and carried them home. She bought seeds, too. Rosa slept well that night and dreamed of many flowers and fat, glowing fruits.

Rosa didnt have to work on Sundays. She got up early and ate her breakfast on the fire es-cape with her pots. Then, she began to put dirt into the pots. She sang a little song until all six of her bags of soil were empty. Then, she laid her precious seed packets out and planned her gar-den. Tomatoes for the biggest pots, and peppers for the next■biggest ones. Flowers in all the rest.

At the end of the day, Rosa sat in her garden and watched the sunset. Soon, she thought, there will be masses of flowers and fat, glowing fruits.

Dont we all know a “Happy Meal” when we see one—the famous boxed meal that includes a hamburger, kid■sized French fries, fruits and milk, served with a toy thats very popular with chil-dren who love to collect them?

A Happy Meal is a form of kids meal sold at a certain fast■food chain since 1979. A toy is in-cluded with the food, both of which are usually contained in a box or paper bag. However, collec-tors of these little toys will not get them any longer, since the company will replace toys with books, and each of these books will mainly pass on nutritional (營(yíng)養(yǎng)的) messages.

Happy Meals are very popular with kids, especially for their collectable toys, when you con-sider that over 1.3 billion of these packages are sold each year! These packages have been very controversial (有爭(zhēng)議的). Health supporters believe that drawing kids to these meals with toys is a clever way of promoting unhealthy food choices. They see it as an advertising strategy (策略) of “catching its customers young”—a move that has paid off very well for the fast food company.

Child development experts say that food habits get formed in children by age six and contin-ue through to their adult life. Foods which contain a lot of fat and sugar such as those served in Happy Meals are believed to play a big role in growing health problems such as obesity and di-abetes (糖尿病). Public health care costs have gone up and untold(難以計(jì)數(shù)的) amounts of money have been spent on caring for these health problems. On November 2, 2010, the San Fran-cisco Board of Supervisors passed a law requiring that childrens meals sold in restaurants must meet certain nutritional standards before they could be sold with toys, to deal with the problem of childhood obesity—in other words, the State of California tried to ban (禁止) the toys in Happy Meals. However, it was strongly opposed by some as being heavy■handed, and the ban was thrown out by the government.

(? ? )11. The aim of the question raised in paragraph 1 is to _______.

A. give a surprise to the toy lovers

B. get readers attention to the article

C. call on readers to buy boxed meals

D. make readers think about the answer

(? ? )12. The underlined word “obesity” in the passage probably means _______.

A. being sick? ? B. being fat? ? C. being thin D. being well

(? ? )13. Books will be added into Happy Meals to _______.

A. introduce the use of the toys

B. increase the cost of the meals

C. help kids learn about nutrition (營(yíng)養(yǎng))

D. spread the message of fast food
