From: Wendy and Jack Brown

Date: September 22, 2018

To: 8th and 9th graders at R.L.S. Junior School

Subject: Bonjour!

Bonjour! (That means hello in French.)

We hope you all had a great summer. Ours was a lot of fun. We have seen so many new things and met so many wonderful people. The French gave us a warm welcome and helped us get used to living here soon. We have so many things to share with all of you. We are going to send you more emails, but here are the best parts of our holiday in France so far.

We had a fantastic time seeing the Tour de France this summer. It is the most famous bicycle race in the world. The riders travel more than two thousand miles in about a month! We got a quick look at the riders as they sped past! After the race, our family rented bikes, and rode along part of the route that the cyclists used.

A few of you asked whether the French really eat snails (蝸牛). The answer is yes. We went out to dinner the other day, and our parents ordered some. We each tried one and it didnt taste too bad. The snails, called escargots, are served with lots of butter. They feel a little rubbery when you bite into them, but they dont really have much taste. Mums favourite food here is the French pastries. Dad loves the red wine. Our favourite is the fresh bread from the shop down the street.

We went to visit the Eiffel Tower a few weeks ago. We went all the way to the top. It was a sunny day, so we could see for miles and miles into the distance. Dad doesnt like heights, so he stayed at the bottom of the tower and took pictures from the ground.

We miss all of you a lot. Write back to us and let us know what is new at home.

Au revoir! (Can you guess what that means in French?)

Wendy and Jack Brown

Have you ever thought of taking a train and having an adventure (奇遇)? Riding the train can be a real adventure. That is how I feel every time I take Amtrak. I often take a four-hour trip to visit my children. Every time I take this trip I never know what will happen.

Last week when I was on the train and over an hour into the train ride, there was a man sitting by himself in the back of the train carrying on a mobile phone conversation—in another language. It was loud and disturbed (打擾) most of the people on the train. I think it was annoying.

Fortunately I sat next to a wonderful old lady who was taking a two-day trip by train. She said her two daughters were distraught at the thought of her driving for three days to reach her home, although she had no trouble driving. The train ride was the only choice for her. She loved to look out of the window and watch the world go by on the train.

She was fun to talk to and asked me when my children started being parents. That is a very good question. Both of us are old and have children. She asked that same question from time to time.

There are always many people on the train from all walks of life, different countries, and many languages. Riding the train is a great way to increase your knowledge and take in all kinds of cultures. If you get hungry, you can buy food in the food car at any time. If you need to use the restroom there is always one available.

It sure beats driving the car, which has to stop for food and restrooms. And it is better than taking the bus.

24. What was the purpose of the authors train ride?

A. To do business. B. To see her children.

C. To see her old friends. D. To visit places of interest.

25. What is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “distraught” in Paragraph 3?

A. Disappointed. B. Satisfied.

C. Worried. D. Pleased.

26. What can we learn about the old lady sitting next to the author?

A. She is too old to drive now.

B. She does not like to take trains.

C. Her daughters live far away from her home.

D. Although she is old, she has a good memory.

27. What is the best title for this passage?

A. Train Ride—a Cultural Experience

B. A Painful Experience on the Train

C. The History of Amtrak

D. A Wonderful Lady

In the last 500 years nothing about people—not their clothes, ideas, or languages—has changed as much as what they eat. Chocolate drink was first made from the seeds of the cacao tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became popular. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important places. Some still exist (存在) today. The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved (挨餓) when the crop failed during the years of 1845—1846, and thousands more were forced to go to live in America.

There are many other foods that have travelled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the worlds largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400s. According to an Arabic (阿拉伯的) story, coffee was discovered when a goat keeper named Lakdi noticed that his goats were eating red fruits on a coffee tree. He tried one and experienced the “wide-awake” feeling that one third of the worlds population now starts the day with.

28. What changed the most greatly in the past 500 years according to the text?

A. Clothes. B. Ideas.

C. Languages. D. Foods.

A. they lacked food to live on

B. Ireland became dependent on potatoes

C. they could easily get potatoes there

D. the potato was brought to Europe from Peru

30. What country is an “Old World” country?

A. Peru. B. Brazil.

C. Ethiopia. D. A South American country.

31. We can learn from the passage that millions of people drink coffee ___ .

A. in the morning B. at noon

C. in the afternoon D. in the evening

Insects are a very healthy food. They have almost as much protein (蛋白質(zhì)) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals.

Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat!

Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food.

But insects will not replace (替代) animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries would have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable.

Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits (好處) of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do.

32. According to the writer, eating insects ___ .

A. is unhealthy

B. makes people put on weight

C. helps protect large animals

D. is environmentally friendly

33. The example of Marcel Dicke is given to show ___ .

A. the high cost of food production

B. its quite easy for farmers to raise insects

C. raising insects is a good choice for farmers

D. the different ways of feeding cows and insects

34. Itll take some time for insects to replace animal meat mainly because of ___ .

A. their terrible taste B. peoples old beliefs

C. family traditions D. eating methods

35. We can infer from David and other insect experts that ___ .

A. people can make a lot of money from insects

B. insects should be better protected

C. people should eat more insects

D. its dangerous to eat insects

第二節(jié) 閱讀七選五(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

I work in a senior high school.? Sometimes they have problems with their schoolwork, and sometimes with their friends. Some people think the worst thing is to do nothing. Laura Mills, a teenager from Washington, agrees. “Problems and worries are normal in life,” says Laura. “But I think talking to someone helps a lot. If we dont talk to someone, well certainly feel worse.”

Laura once lost her purse, and worried for days. She was afraid to tell her parents about it. She even walked three miles to school each day because she didnt have any money. She just kept thinking, “If I tell my parents, theyll be angry!”? Her dad said he sometimes made careless mistakes himself. They got her a new purse and asked her to be more careful. “I will always remember to share my problems in the future!” Laura says.

He feels the same way as Laura. “It is best not to avoid our problems. We should always try to solve them.” He thinks that you can first find someone to talk to.? Students often forget that their parents have more experience than them, and are always there to help them.

In English, we say that sharing a problem is like cutting it in half.

A. Worries can only bring about more worries.

B. What can you do to help them out of troubles?

C. Students often have a lot of worries these days.

D. This person doesnt need to be an expert like himself.

E. Robert Hunt advises students about common problems.

F. So youre halfway to solving a problem if you talk to someone about it!

G. But in the end, she talked to her parents and they were really understanding.
