If youre locking into your career plans, college counselor Nancy Donehower has three words for you: Dont do it.

Huh? A college counselor tells you not to lock into plans? Whats that all about? Actually, Nancy isnt the only counselor advising students to take their time in discovering who they are and what they want to do when they get out of college.

“Preparing broadly makes sense to me,” she explains, “that the best preparation for a future thats still unfolding is a broad preparation. It shouldnt prevent you from following areas that light you up, but a broad preparation will prepare you for multiple careers. Thats important because jobs change more frequently due to changes in technology and business competition. Some jobs that are available today may be on their way out in 10 years. The best thing about preparing broadly is that you get to live in a big world. You avoid getting typecast in a job or business area, and if your job becomes out of date, you can move on.”

Students let the “nextstep mind” interfere with their learning as well. Many students dont take courses outside their comfort zone for fear it will ruin their GPA (grade point average) and their chances of getting into a certain college. “You may be reluctant to go outside your areas of strength for fear youll get a low grade,” says Nancy. “But if you think one grade in one class will ruin your chances of admission, youre doing yourself a disservice. Colleges look at a number of factors in addition to grades. Students often think of requirements for colleges as much tighter and narrower than they really are.”

Since colleges work to admit a diverse group of students, the best thing to do is be yourself and explore your options. “I know of many people in their late 20s who are unhappy in their careers and who regret that they didnt pursue a wider range of interests while in college.”

Her advice to students: “Think about who you are right now. You have certain preferences. You have areas you like to study. You have certain skills.” She suggests using interest surveys to help you gain a sense of where your interests and skills can lead you.

“Follow your nose and find a college that will support and encourage you academically and socially. Have faith in yourself and the things you like to do,” she adds.

38. What does Nancy advise college students to do in Paragraph 3?

A. Make full use of their free time.

B. Get work experience as much as possible.

C. Make practical career plans with determination.

D. Equip themselves in advance for more career chances.

39. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A. Many college students refuse to learn other things beyond their strength.

B. Preparing broadly for future plans is really useful for college students.

C. Most colleges value students with a good command of social skills.

D. Requirements for applying for colleges become stricter and stricter.

40. What does the passage mainly want to tell us?

A. How to study as efficiently as you can.

B. Dont be stuck with a “nextstep mind”.

C. Realize your dreams with reasonable plans.

D. How to choose an ideal college for yourself.

C

Once architect Frank Lloyd Wright built a house for businessman Hibbard Johnson. One rainy evening Johnson was entertaining guests for dinner when the roof began to leak. The water leaked through directly above Johnson, dropping steadily onto his bald head. Angry, he called Wright. “Frank,” he said, “you built this beautiful house for me and we enjoy it very much. But ... the roof leaks, and right now Im with some distinguished guests and its leaking right on top of my head.” There was a pause on the line, and Frank replied, “Well, why dont you move your chair?”

Just when wed like to have everything perfect in our lives, the roof springs a leak into even the best constructed and waterproof lives. Leaks happen. We have a choice, we can sit under the leak and complain, or we can regain our joy by moving our chair—changing our perspective.

Now, some will point out that the reason they have no joy in their lives is that they dont have a reason to be joyful. They have a lot of leaks in their roof. Life seems like its fallen apart. They arent satisfied with their job, if they even have one. Their family has problems. Their health isnt good. Their car is under repair. They just cant see a “reason” for being joyful. Its hard to be joyful when life is going against you. Its hard to be joyful when youre struggling with troubles, or defeated by pain, or unsure of your future.

But theres a problem with that approach to life. If we wait till everything turns out the way we want them to in our lives or were not going to be joyful until all the leaks are repaired in the roof of our lives...THEN were never going to experience joy.

Theres an alternative. You dont have to wait until youre happy with your life. Deep spiritual joy in your life will always bring you happiness. But the pursuit of happiness wont always bring you joy. People have a hard time understanding the difference. Worldly (世俗的) happiness almost always relies on some situation or event to make us feel good. If something good happens, well feel good, but if something bad happens, we wont.

By contrast, spiritual joy doesnt depend on present situation. In fact, spiritual joy can often exist despite our circumstances. Dont let other people steal your joy. If the roof is leaking and you cant get someone to fix it right away, move your chair. Change your perspective. Lay hold of joy and take control of your circumstances, rather than swinging with your emotions and continuing to look for happiness.

41. Whats the purpose of mentioning Frank Lloyd Wright?

A. To show his success in architecture.

B. To introduce the topic of the passage.

C. To show his talent for communication skills.

D. To tell readers how to deal with leaking roofs.

42. What can we learn about Frank from his reply?

A. He felt sad at the news of his bad work.

B. He refused to admit he had done a bad job.

C. He suggested changing to another solution.

D. He was good at creating happiness for others.

43. When we are faced with “leaks”, we should try to.

A. wait for them to be repaired with patience

B. face the trouble with a positive attitude

C. control our negative emotions determinedly

D. insist on making efforts to repair them

44. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Why dont you move your chair?

B. Isnt there a better alternative?

C. How to take hold of spiritual joy

D. Dont let other people steal your joy

What is one of the most boring and tiresome words ever? Like discipline, responsibility is one of those words you have probably heard so many times from authority figures that you have been a bit allergic to it. Still, its one of the most important things to grow and to feel good about your life. Without it as a foundation nothing else in any personal development book really works.

Its been said that the line between childhood and adulthood is crossed when we move from saying “It got lost” to “I lost it”. Indeed, being accountable, understanding and accepting the role our choices play in the things that happen are important signs of emotional and moral maturity. Thats why responsibility is one of the main supports of good character.

Many people have been refusing to grow up and avoiding the burdens implied in being accountable. Yes, responsibility sometimes requires us to do things that are unpleasant or even frightening. It asks us to carry our own weight, prepare and set goals and exercise the discipline to reach our ambitions. But the benefits of accepting responsibility are far more important than the shortlived advantages of refusing to do so. No one makes his or her life better by avoiding responsibility. In fact, irresponsibility is a form of selfforced servitude (苦役) to circumstances and to other people.

George Bernard Shaw once said, “People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I dont believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they cant find them, make them.” “Man must stop owing his problems to his environment and learn again to exercise his will—his personal responsibility in the realm of faith and morals,” said Albert Schweitzer.

The following incident shows blaming others and not taking full responsibility: Bernard L. Brown, Jr., once worked in a hospital where a patient knocked over a cup of water, which spilled on the floor beside the patients bed. The patient was afraid he might slip on the water if he got out of the bed, so he asked a nurse to mop it up. The patient didnt know it, but the hospital policy said that small spills were the responsibility of the nurse while large spills were to be mopped up by the hospitals housekeeping group.

The nurse decided the spill was a large one and she called the housekeeping group. A housekeeper arrived and declared the spill a small one. An argument followed. “Its not my responsibility,” said the nurse, “because its a large puddle (水坑).” The housekeeper didnt agree. “Well, its not mine,” she said, “the puddle is too small.”

The angry patient listened for a time, then took a pitcher of water from his night table and poured the whole thing on the floor. “Is that a big enough puddle now for you two to decide?” he asked. It was, and that was the end of the argument.

So, responsibility is about our ability to respond to circumstances and to choose the attitudes, actions and reactions that shape our lives. It is a concept of power that puts us in the drivers seat. The grand sight of the potential of our lives can only be appreciated when we begin to be accountable and independent. If you want more control over your life and the pleasures, power of freedom and independence, all you have to do is be responsible. Responsible people not only depend on themselves, but show others that they can be depended on.

45. What can we learn about responsibility?

A. Its of secondary importance to discipline.

B. Its the basic but leading quality in ones life.

C. It has the same requirements for people as discipline.

D. Its the most important factor in building ones character.

46. What does the underlined part “get on” mean?

A. Struggle. B. Succeed.

C. Serve. D. Exist.

47. Those who escape from accepting responsibility.

A. cant achieve their goals in a short time

B. can benefit from not growing up in the end

C. can miss the advantages of being a responsible person

D. can avoid the burdens of unpleasant or frightening things

48. What does George Bernard Shaws saying imply?

A. We should bear responsibility regardless of situations.

B. We shouldnt owe failure to the sense of responsibility.

C. We should first step out of our present circumstances.

D. We shouldnt care what kind of situations were in.

49. Why was the patient quite angry with the nurse and the housekeeper?

A. Because he had slipped on the water by chance.

B. Because he had to mop up the water by himself.

C. Because he didnt like the noise made in hospital.

D. Because he found them refusing their responsibility.

50. What is the authors understanding of responsibility in the last paragraph?

A. It strengthens our ability to fight against bad circumstances.

B. It encourages us to be more helpful and independent.

C. It enables us to react with dependable attitude.

D. It shapes our lives with more opportunities.

四、任務型閱讀(共10小題,每小題1分,滿分10分)

請認真閱讀下列短文,并根據所讀內容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一個最恰當的單詞。注意:每個空格只填一個單詞。

Literature is a term used to describe written as well as spoken material. Generally speaking, it is often used to describe anything from creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama and fiction.

Then why read literature, since it is often imaginary and seems unconnected with real life?

A lot of us read literature for pleasure and relaxation. Its always pleasant to read some interesting books, such as comedies and novels, in our spare time. In a modern life full of pressure, it is our common desire to read some imaginary works and seek relaxation from the stress in life.

Reading literature is more than fun; it also enables us to acquire knowledge. As a general rule, literature represents a language or a people, and it often gives us an insight (洞察力)into the traditions, customs, beliefs, attitudes and values of the age in which it was written.

Sometimes literature can even offer us new, creative ways to have a better understanding of the world. It helps us make sense of the world around us. It introduces us to new worlds of experiences.

We enjoy the comedy and the tragedy of poems, stories and plays; and we may even grow through our literary journey with books. Eventually, we may discover meaning in literature by looking at what the author says and how he / she says it. In a sense, we explore the human condition and analyze how and why people think the way they think and feel the way they feel. Literature enables us to think analytically and promotes open minds. We see the world through the eyes of different cultures and in turn learn the ways to deal with things that happen around.

So we can definitely say literature is of great importance to us. Why not get going with one poem, drama or fiction at once?

五、書面表達(滿分25分)

請閱讀下面文字,并按照要求用英語寫一篇150詞左右的文章。

Every teacher instructs students in a different way, and some methods are to be more popular with students than others. “Tough love”—treating students as individuals who must take responsibility—isnt always what students want. But for me, its the most effective teaching method of all. Mr. Seltzer, my eighthgrade English teacher, was the example of high standards. His tests were difficult and seemed fit for a college student. Pop quizzes could be given at any time. Our homework was always the most. Throughout the year, we wrote frequently and Mr. Seltzer expected us to produce quality work every day. He graded our work “cruelly”. Low grades were common. When I saw my low grades at the start of the year—in the 70s, I realized that I could easily fail the class. By the end of the year, I had an 80 average. It meant more to me than a 90 from another teacher though this was lower than I was used to. Because an 80 from Mr. Seltzer was a real achievement. Mr. Seltzers “tough love” made me a better student.

54. Reasons / Purposes / Aims / Goals 55. relaxed 56. knowledge / information 57. more 58. enjoy / appreciate 59. open 60. important

五、One possible version:

From the passage we know the author introduces his teacher whose “tough love” makes him a better student. “Tough love” may look cruel but it is really an effective method for many students.

Many students hope their teachers should be kinder and dont set up too many rules to control them. They even wish their teachers to give them higher scores to make their parents happy. But they havent realized the disadvantage of “soft love”, which will ruin them in the long term. Tough love may make students feel frustrated but it is the best way to make students get real success.

My math teacher was a responsible teacher; tough love shown in her teaching helped all the students make progress. If we made mistakes in written work, we were required to rewrite the assignment. My study improved in this way and I now perform extremely well in high school.
