Many years ago, in the small Polish town of Pinchow, there lived a trader named Leib. He worked hard, but times were bad. He never had enough money to buy presents for his children or a silk dress for his wife, Sonya. Sometimes he couldn't even buy food or wood to burn to keep them warm.

One cold winter day, Leib made an important decision. He would leave home for Krakow. Maybe he could earn more money there. He gave his wife all the money he had and, with a heavy heart, said good-bye to her and his children.

In Krakow, Leib put all of his energy into his work and had amazing success. After twelve months, he had six hundred zlotys. But every day, he missed his family more. “I cannot go on another day without Sonya and my children,” he said, and decided to go home. He already had enough money to take care of them for a very long time.

On his way home, Leib stopped in the town, Rozka. He was tired and wanted to rest. Fearing there might be robbers in the town, he decided to bury his money before going to the hotel. Near a small wood house that seemed to be deserted, he dug a hole and, looking around to make sure no one saw him, buried his money.

But the house was not deserted. The old man owning it was watching through his window. When Leib left for the hotel, the old man went out and dug it up. Next morning, when Leib went to get his money, it was gone. Looking around sadly, he noticed the nearby house. “Whoever lives in that house must have seen me bury the money,” Leib thought. “But if I accuse him of stealing it, he will call me a liar, so I have to come up with an idea that will make him give me my money back by himself.”
