1 due

生義：adj.（1）到期的 (required or expected to happen or be done )

如：This assignment is due tomorrow.這個任務的最后完成期限是明天。

My wife is due in three weeks.我妻子三星期后回來。

The bill is due at the end of the month.這張賬單月底到期。

（2）應付的，應得的 (owed or deserved )

如：She finally got the recognition she was due.她終于獲得了應有的認可。

The amount due is 45 dollars.應付的金額是45美元。

（3）應有的 (in a proper or necessary amount )

如：I will give your idea due consideration.我會充分考慮你的意見的。

Treat your teacher with due respect.給老師以應有的尊重。

n.應付款，應得之物

如：I’ve already paid my membership dues.我已經交了我的會員費。

adv.正（directly, exactly）

2 bite

熟義：v.咬

生義：v.（1）使產生強烈疼痛或不適 （to cause sharp pain or stinging discomfort to）

如：An icy wind bit our faces.寒風刺痛了我們的臉。

（2）（魚）咬鉤；（人）上當 （of fish: to take a bait; to respond so as to be caught (as by a trick)）

如：The fish aren’t biting today.今天魚就是不咬鉤。

I tried to sell my old car to him but he didn't bite.我想把舊車賣給他，但他不上當。

n.（1）咬

如：I took a bite on the apple.我咬了一口蘋果。

（2）少量食物

如：I just took a bite as breakfast this morning.我今天早上只吃了一點點。

3 agree

熟義：vi.同意；和…意見一致

生義：vi.（1）相符，相同，一致

如：Your story agrees with what I heard．你的說法和我聽到的不一致。

（2）（氣候、食物等）相宜，適合（with）

如：Long plane trips don’t agree with me.長途飛行不適合我。（讓我感到不舒服）

熟義：adj.空白的 n.空白，空格

生義：（1）v.沒表情的，沒興趣的 (exhibiting no interest or expression )

如：The stranger returned my greeting with a blank look.我和那個陌生人打招呼，但他只是漠然地看了我一眼。

（2）adj.茫然的，不理解的 (lacking understanding; confused)

如：He looked blank even after the explanations.聽了解釋后，他看上去更茫然了。

（3）n.（記憶中的）空白 (something without information or thought)

如：I can’t think where I’ve left my umbrella; my mind's a complete blank.我想不起來將傘放在哪里了；我的大腦一片空白。

5 rough

熟義：adj.洶涌的；粗糙的；大概的

生義：adj.（1）不平的；崎嶇的 (having an uneven or irregular surface; not smooth or level)

如：rough hilly country 道路崎嶇的山鄉

（2）粗魯的；粗野的(of a person or their behavior, not gentle; violent or boisterous)

如：rough manners 粗魯無禮的態度

（3）未完成的，不完善的 (not finished tidily or decoratively)

如：a rough drawing 草圖

（4）難行的 (difficult to travel through or penetrate, wild)

如：into the rough woods 深入難行的樹林

（5）艱難的 (presenting a challenge, difficult)

如：rough to deal with 很難處理

Despite a rough start, the team won more games this season than last.盡管開局不易，但這個隊本賽季贏得的比賽比上一賽季多。

Tomorrow, he knew, would be a rough day.他知道明天將是不輕松的一天。

（6）不容易的，不愉快的(If you say that someone has had a rough time, you mean that they have had some difficult or unpleasant experiences.)

生義：v.前進 (to go or move forward or onward)

如：More troops were advancing to the front.更多軍隊正在開往前線。

n.預付款 (payment of money before due)

如：She asked me for an advance on her salary.她讓我提前預付一部分工資。

7 against

熟義：prep.反對；靠，倚

生義：prep.作為背景 (having as background)

如：The picture looks good against the white wall.有白色的墻做背景，這幅畫顯得很好看。

8 bitter

熟義：adj.苦的

生義：adj.（1）沉痛的，沉重的；令人難以承受的 （difficult or distasteful to accept, admit, or bear）

如：the bitter truth 沉痛的事實

Tony’s decision has come as a bitter blow.托尼的決定是一個沉重的打擊。

（2）程度深的或強度高的，激烈的 （intense or fierce）

如：Why was she so bitter against Mr.Smith? 為什么她那么強烈地反對史密斯先生？

The whole country was in bitter sorrow after the attack occurred in Manchester.曼徹斯特襲擊事件發生后，英國全國都沉浸在深深的悲痛中。

（3）凌冽的，刺骨的 （of wind, cold, or weather, intensely cold）

如：A bitter wind blowing from the north, she shivered with cold.一陣刺骨的北風刮過，她冷得直哆嗦。

熟義：v.穿過

生義：adj.生氣的（annoyed）

如：Don’t be cross with him—after all, he meant to help.別生他的氣，畢竟他本意是想幫忙的。

10 finish

熟義：v.完成；用完，吃完；耗盡

生義：v.（1）給拋光，上漆 (to provide with a finish; especially to put a final coat or surface on)

如：finish a table with varnish 給桌子上一道清漆

（2）給最后加工，使完美，潤飾

如：finish one’s new home 給新家做最后的裝飾
