The tower’s stone supports, rendered as chevron-shaped columns, converge at the tower’s height and mediate the tension of the earth to a single point in the sky. Sheathed in glass and stone, the podium houses perimeter columns and eight-story diagonal, steel braces that support this ascent.
As Shenzhen’s tallest building, Ping An Finance Centre serves as the physical and iconic center of the city’s new central business district, anchoring the area with its towering facades of stone, glass, and stainless steel. Because of the sheer quantity and scale of materials needed, KPF sought reliable and maintainable materials that could stand up to the high, windy altitudes and salty, coastal climate, eventually choosing stainless steel for its corrosion-resistant properties. Together, the tower’s tapered facade reduces wind loads by 40% and its stainless steel piers form a protective net against lightning strikes.
The resulting design for Ping An’s headquarters espouses the largest stainless steel facade in the world to date, using a total of 1,700 tons of 316L stainless steel. The team conducted extensive studies of the building’s curtain wall, utilizing visual mockups to ensure the compatibility of all components and paying special attention to the design of its metal subframe. By working with local factories as close to the site as possible, KPF was able to limit the risk of damage to the panels in transit and create the consistency that makes the tower’s height and streamlined form possible. The application of 80% recycled material also promotes the tower’s sustainability at the urban scale.
