Along Shanghai’s busiest shopping district, the Michael Kors facade expresses sophistication and luxury with a dynamic interplay of metal and light, marking a standout location for the renowned fashion brand.
Innovative in its approach to light and experience, this syncopated facade system remains legible despite its intricacies. Its gleaming disposition embodies Michael Kors’ reputation for rich fabrics and polished designs, while its carefully implemented pattern of backlit, metal shingles maximize reflectivity. From any angle, day or night, the facade appears to constantly shift and sparkle as visitors approach the store. The design affirms that the brand’s identity can not only exist independent of its logo, but will also stand out among its competition. Its aesthetic presence becomes a glowing lantern that marks the entry to the larger Jing An complex.
A work flow teetering between physical and digital fabrication ensured the implementation of the facade and its multidimensional experience. Coding a model in Grasshopper, the design team was able to manipulate the facade’s play on light through metal texture and orientation. This inventive system stitched short and long units into vertical compositions and then aggregated them into seemingly random patterns. Lined with white, vertical strips that reflect ambient light, the shingles are composed of silver, titanium-coated aluminum and rendered with a texture similar to marbled leather. Like the city of Shanghai, the project is spectacularly global, right down to its details: the facade and pattern of each panel was designed by KPF in New York, composed of metal sourced in Germany, fabricated in southern China, and hand-assembled on site.
