Not Just a Phone

Jackie:Well, I’m talking to Karin about her mobile phone. It’s not just a mobile phone, is it?
Karin:No. For me it is an extra pair of hands and a lifesaver in many situations.
Jackie:Now, am I right in saying you’ve just got loads of apps on there?
Karin:Yes, I’m always adding new extra apps and I’ve got quite a favourite that I’ve [sic] just loaded about a month ago.
Jackie:OK, how many do you have then?
Karin:I think probably about 20, which for a lot of people isn’t that many, but, for my age group—I’m in my 50s—that’s quite a lot compared to my friends.
Jackie:So, you have a new favourite. What’s that called?
Karin:“Glimpse.”
Jackie:OK. So, what does that do?
Karin:Well, when you go on holiday, it’s very easy to take loads of photos, and when you return from holiday, everyone wants to see where you’ve been and what happened, and it can take a long time to go through all the photos. With the Glimpse app you just press little clips of video every day two or three times, and then the app connects them all together. It makes a mini-film never more than about two or three minutes in total of all your little clips, and it gives a very good overview and flavour of the holiday without boring your friends.
Jackie:Sounds great!
Karin:Yes, I like it a lot.
Jackie:OK. Another favourite?
Karin:Well, I try and keep fit, and I’ve got an app called “MapMyRun,” which allows me to see in exact detail how far I’ve run and the split times...
Jackie:So what do you mean by the “split times”?

Karin:So, whether my first kilometre of running was slower than my last one, so it breaks it up. My first kilometre might’ve been sort of 5? minutes and my last kilometre and maybe up a hill was seven minutes, something like that.
Jackie:Right.
Karin:And the fun thing is my daughter is also on the same app, and so we can link together and I can see she’s done a run in Manchester when I’m running in London, and I can see that maybe I’ve beaten her on my run that day, although, if I’m honest, usually she beats me.
Jackie:Do you have any games at all?
Karin:I do have games, but I only do word games…
Jackie:OK.
Karin:…and only two. “Scrabble,”which is great because you can play internationally with people all around the world, and another one which is called “Word Streak,” which most people would be more familiar with the game Boggle…
Jackie:Right.
Karin:It’s a bit like Word Search, that sometimes people do in puzzle magazines.
Jackie:Right, it’s OK. So, it’s really become a part of your life.
Karin:Yes, I’m on my phone…since I’ve had apps and the smartphone, I’m on my phone probably twice as much as I used to be before.
