The Application of White Space in Layout design

【Abstract】Our society is developing rapidly， in a society like this， the entrepreneurs and product manufacturers tend to use white space or pictures massively instead of text information in their advertisements or leaflets. This phenomenon is totally different from it was in the years past， when high prices and out-dated technologies limited the capability of printing industry， and forced them to put more text information in their publications or printed materials.

1. Application of White Space in Contemporary Layout design

Contemporary designers have acquired a taste for more free ways to design format. In order to highlight the theme and make the content and visual framework more proper and lucid， the use of white space would be very necessary. layout designers also should know what they need to cut and add into their design. They could cut the unnecessary and useless information to make the design more lucid and human-centered， they could also add more sense of form accordingly to make the design more expressive to the readers or readers.

2. The Use of White Space in Actual Layout design

2.1 White space and the whole picture

No matter what kind of method designers used in their design， they also need to make the layout more proper， and finally integrate the entire process. White places is not only highlighting the theme， it also emphasizes it.The substantial parts in the format can be get by the way of using different font-sizes， high saturated colors and thick lines， but the format also need to make its charms and vigor bringing out the best in each other， that is why the white space is necessary. This can be achieved by lowering the saturation of the colors and using narrow lines accordingly. In order to emphasize the main body， designers can weaken the other part to avoid distracting readers attention. Designers shall not use the white space casually， it can only be used when it is helpful to the whole picture.

2.2 White space and the balance

The feeling of balance is a specific note in layout design. This kind of feeling is not quantifiable factors such as mass or distance， it is a sort of contradictory entity of many factors mixed together. White space is something which could bring change into regularity， remain the balance in movement， keep unity in contradictory. Only in this way it is possible to make the layout design capable of both attracting consumers by its visual form and showing its strong artistic expression. It is also a good way to show the artistic effect of harmony and balance between dynamic and static， which enables the work to achieve its purpose in a widened and better way.

2.3 White space and the rhythm

Based on different design objectives， designers shall use the white space accordingly to create different rhythm in their works. The rhythm could bring more feeling of motion to the format， and white spaces could be a part of it with a more lively design. White space is also capable of breaking the repetitive visual elements to create a totally kind of feeling， which draws a lot of attention. Because the themes of the works are different， designers need to choose to add more rhythm of motion or break the regularities accordingly. Adding more rhythm to the main body could make people feel more relaxed and pleased， on the other hand， breaking the repetitive elements could make the work draws more attention. Therefore， it is not appropriate to use white space blindly， designers need to choose a proper way to use it according to the theme of the work.

3. The Beauty of White Space in Modern Layout design

It is crucial to control the scale of using white space， a simple and pure blank space would be very superficial. Designers need to add the white spaces between elements such as the graphic shapes and texts， this method would not only makes sure that readers enjoying their reading with relaxed and comfortable feelings， but also keeps the entire layout harmonious and coordinated， consequently， a work with proper virtual and real space can be completed. In todays world， the development of science and information technology is so rapid， layout design not only should up to the aesthetic standards and provide its basic function， but also has the humanistic care to the readers considering the their own feelings. So no matter in what kind of design， the designers must make the best use of white space， and consciously and purposefully use white space in the layout design.
