Early in The Third Man （Carol Reed， 1949）， there is a scene that shows Harry hastily escaped from the sewer and eventually killed. Beginning with cut in from a long shot of Harry was squatting on a street and make desperate efforts to open the lid of the Sewer to escape. His trembling hands hardly can instantly open the lid of the sewer and nearly felled. All this can be reflected in Harry panicked and urgently escaped. Low angle shot the director used and he use the way of cut in connected with the previous shot. The purpose is to make the audience feel the atmosphere of the tension. In this shot， it also shows the Hollywood conventional shot technique ----- shaking the camera， it exacerbated the tension and urgency of the atmosphere of the shot.

Then， the shot cut in the empty lane， the shadow run towards to the camera from a distance. The director utilized the lighting design of the classical Hollywood cinema ------ three-point lighting， the key light came from the right side ， when the shadow was gradually closed to the lens， the key light make the soldier brighten， therefore， we can clearly identify that the shadow was the soldier who chased Harrys. This shots fill light was from the left side， as well as the back light came from the back side. It makes the shadow of the soldier can clearly appear in the lens. That is， what is called silhouette.

When Harry looked around the exit of the sewer and end in failure， the shot cut in the centre of an empty sewer， Harry stood at there， with the arched stone door all around. At the beginning of this shot， the shot was long shot and then changed to the medium close-up of Harry. When it cut in the long shot， the shot use the high angle. The light was from the direction of the camera and it threw the light on those the arched stone doors. Then the shot cut in the medium close-up of Harry， this shot was level， the light came from the either side of Harrys body. At the same time， this shot use the way of continuity editing， it is clear to show harry and the arched doors between the relationship of space and time. It will indicate and emphasize the feared mind， in the end， he will be collapsed.

The end of this scene shows when Harry was shot， dying to climb the stairs. The director used the way of continuity editing. This made the Harrys eye contact of eager to open the lid of the sewer and the characteristics of ruffian of the impenitence heart performed vividly. In this shot ， the director use the top lighting ， high angle shot and low angle shot will always switch each other. It shows the expression of painful struggle of Harry， at the same time， it indicated that he eager to escape from the sewer. Then the shot cut in the close-up of Harry， the camera followed some of the close-up of the side face of Harry.

Conclusion：

The change of shot， the set of the light and the shadow， they are able to make the audience clearly to observe the spatial and time relationship between the characters or the relationship between the characters and scenery. Highlight the characteristic of the figures， exaggerate atmosphere and promote the development of the plot.
