As the \"most profitable trade fair company with its own exhibition grounds in Europe\" (in their own words), Messe Düsseldorf Group closed fiscal year 2016 with a result well above its target. In a year strong in events due to exhibition cycles, the group’s sales revenue was € 442.8 million(2015: € 302 million). The group as a whole achieved a net income after tax of € 58.8 million (2015: € 10.3 million). The group generated sales of around € 73.1 million outside Germany (€ 100 million in the previous year). The foreign market with the largest sales was once again Russia (€ 28 million) despite the crisis, followed by China (€ 18.6 million), Singapore (€ 6.7 million) and USA (€ 6.4 million).

The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) is celebrating a successful 2016/17 fiscal year by confirming that it hosted 569 events. A total of 13 citywide conventions for future years were won in the fiscal year of April 2016 to April 2017, 11 from the United States. This represents the highest number of major convention wins from the United States within one fiscal year in more than a decade. It was also a record year for the MTCC’s gross revenue, which totaled $65 million.

These record sales figures mean that the company has the 400 million mark for the first time exceeded. At the Munich location, the trade fair company earned 337.7 million euros, 57.4 million of sales were generated by the Locations segment, that is, guest events.

The 13th edition of its annual report on the Trade Fair Industry in Asia released by UFI recently showed that for the first time, net space sold at Asian trade fairs surpassed 20 million net square meters, up from 19.69 square meters the year before. Overall, that represents a year-on-year increase of 5.5%. Of that total, 58% was sold in China – or in terms of net space sold 12.0 million square meters.

Other Southeast Asian markets that outperformed the regional average included Vietnam(7.3%) and Indonesia (5.8%). China, Asia’s largest trade fair market, was the second fastest growing market last year posting growth of 7.7% in 2016.

As an even year, 2016 was a weak year for Koelmesse for cyclical reasons and an annual loss of -17 million euros was planned for. But then results turned out much better than expected: A group revenue of 274 million euros and a loss of 0.9 million euros meant that breaking even was within reach, making 2016 the last loss-making year in the company’s history. In total, 73 events, including 25 self-organised trade fairs in Cologne, 27 events abroad and 20 guest events on the site of Koelnmesse were held.

The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) celebrated its 14th anniversary by giving back to the community of Cape Town. The centre donated R14,000 worth of much-needed goods to each of its five local community partners. The donation (worth R70,000 in total) included electronic devices, kitchen appliances, furniture and catering equipment. The organisations are all non-governmental operating in the Western Cape and working amongst vulnerable communities. The partners were asked to identify critical items they need to enhance and improve their operations.
