For the UK-based RELX Group, exhibitions achieved underlying revenue growth of +6% in the first half of 2017, in line with the first half of the prior year. Revenues are £628 million (€729 million), up from £549 million (€703 million) for the first half of 2016. 21 new events were launched in the first half of 2017, two small acquisitions completed.

Total events revenue was £380.4 million (H1 2016: £306.7 million), which benefited from an FX tailwind of £30.1 million and revenue from the acquisitions. The growth of the events portfolio improved significantly during the first half, with the benefit of improved growth performance from the portfolio particularly in Asia.

The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) looks back on a successful fiscal year 2016-2017 (July 2016 to June 2017): A total of 1,102 events were held at the HKCEC, including 116 exhibitions. Of these, 48 were trade exhibitions, 22 trade and public exhibitions, and 46 public exhibitions. The shows represented industries as diverse as fashion, toys, cloud technology, automobiles, and technology for the elderly. The other over one hundred exhibitions were recurrent trade and public fairs.

A recent study by UFI found that Exhibition-accompanying apps etc. are very widely used, including in Brazil (82%), the USA, Russia and Thailand (all 73%). The exhibition companies are also digitalising themselves: 55% of global respondents stated that they are designing processes and workflows to be more digital. The global number one is Thailand (73%), followed by China(71%) and Germany (69%).

The latest AUMA study finds that around 3.2 million people travelled from other countries to Germany in 2016 to acquire information and set up new business opportunities at trade fairs. This is the highest number of foreign visitors at German trade fairs ever recorded (previous high: 2.65 million in 2013). For the first time they made up slightly over 30% of all visitors. A major reason for this development was the unusually strong exhibition programme in 2016.

The global exhibitions market will continue growing at approximately 4% with a compound annual growth rate through to 2021, reports the ninth edition of Globex, produced annually by strategy consultancy AMR International. The report points out new growth opportunities for international organisers in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Macau and the Philippines.
