Four Workshops Entitled Wisdom Talks
On the morning of October 14, four workshops entitled Wisdom Talks were held simultaneously after the grand opening ceremony of The CPC in Dialogue with the World 2016.
The fi rst Wisdom Talk was themed in “The Cooperation of Major Countries in Global Governance”. Lin Yifu, former senior vice president of the World Bank and professor of Peking University, asserted that “The CPC is playing a more and more important role in global governance. The infl uence of China is going up, which finds expression in its proportion of GDP.” Edward Miliband MP, the former leader of Labor Party, and former minister of Energy and Climate Change of the UK, said that “China has made a great achievement worthy of our study. Particularly in the positive response to global climate change, China has taken a signifi cant step forward.”
The second Wisdom Talk focused on “The Win-win Cooperation in the Belt and Road”. Fang Xinghai, vice president of China Securities Regulatory Commission, and Abhisit Vejjajiva, chairman of the Democratic Party and former Prime Minister of Thailand, spoke at the Talk. According to Fang, “the significance brought about by China’s Belt and Road Initiative lies in the prospect that it helps to create more economic and social demand so as to prepare for global economic growth.” According to Abhisit, “although China is the world’s second largest economy, it always regards itself as a developing country, leading the other developing countries to actively participate in global economic governance. This should be highly appreciated. ”
Held at the same time was the third Wisdom Talk whose theme was the “Central European Role in Global Governance”. Zheng Yongnian, director of East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore and Liam Byrne, former chief secretary of UK Treasury explored the ways expected by the politicians to spread the benefi ts of globalization, hoping China and Europe could set an example and make innovations in this aspect.
The last Wisdom Talk discussed “Chinese Scheme for Global Governance”. Zhang Weiwei, head of the Institute of Chinese Studies, Fudan University, and Martin Jacques, a scholar from Cambridge University talked with each other, agreeing that China, as one of the countries benefiting from globalization, hopes to share its experience with other countries. “China will not seek hegemony though it is getting stronger. This is always clearly stated by the CPC,” they said.
