At present, scientists have found a way to use stem cells to generate several key eye tissues. They use the method to successfully restore the visual ability of the rabbit. This method is also expected to restore vision for humans in the future , and be used in the treatment of visually impaired people in the same way .
The eyes are made up of a number of special tissues that develop from a variety of different cell lineages. Previous studies have indicated that the specific cell types that form the retina or cornea can be formed in the laboratory by pluripotent stem cells. Pluripotent stem cells possess self-repairing ability, which can be developed to form cells and tissues. "This study suggests that the various types of human stem cells can be cultivated with the characteristics of the cornea, lens and retina," said Quantock Andrew, co-author of the study. "This study shows that all types of human stem cells can be cultivated with the cornea, lens and retina.". More importantly, this study confirms that a cell type (corneal epithelial cell) can be cultivated in the laboratoryin the future, and then used to transplanted in the rabbit's eyes, to achieve functionalization and restore visual ability."
Scientists' research is not only to foster the treatment of cells in the other regions around eyes, but also will help to achieve a clinical eye transplant and restore visual function in the future. Of course, there is still a long way to go to achieve human clinical trials.
