THE CELEBRATION OF WILDNESS

One of the most festive nations in the world, Spain has something to celebrate for every month of the year.

The Running of the Bulls, or Encierro in Spanish, is one of the better-known celebrations.

As part of the San Fermín festival, the Running of the Bulls is annually held in Pamplona, a city in northern Spain. While the San Fermín festival dates back to the twelfth century, it was not until the year 1591 that the first bull run was held in the town.

Since then, the event has been celebrated every year and has developed into one of the world's most watched festivals.

On July 7th every year, the tranquility of Pamplona is broken by day and night fiesta celebrations. Local villagers will drive bulls from their farms to an 820 metre-long historic street where brave people join bulls in a sprint and try every effort to provoke them so that they run into the bullring in the highest of fighting spirits.

Outside festival times, the historic street is a bustling commercial destination where a countdown timer is most visibly placed showing the exact time (accurateto the second) to the next event.

Imagine the most gripping and awesome bullfighting scene in a spacious, empty bullring. Do modern people need to prove their power and bravery by cruelly hurting animals? Or is it worthwhile to run the risk of getting injured or even losing life?

Despite these debatable questions, the Encierro is still being staged every year in Pamplona. Excitement and revelries still seize the city for seven days and nights. Bullfights are still considered a national treasure by many Spaniards, and Spanish men still see bullfighting as a good chance to prove their bravery.
