The first people who gave names to hurricanes were those — the people of Puerto Rico （波多黎各）. The small island of Puerto Rico is in the West India， off the coast of Florida. This is where all the hurricanes begin that strike the east of the United States. The people of Puerto Rico expect some of these unwelcome visitors every year. Each one is named after the Saints （圣者） day on which it arrives. Two of the most serious storms were the Santa Aha in 1925 and the San Ciriaca in 1899.

Giving girls names to hurricanes is a fairly new idea. It all began with a story called “storm” written by George Steward in 1941. In it a weatherman enjoyed himself by naming storms after the girls he knew. He named one Maria. The story describes how Maria grew and developed， and how she changed the lives of people when she struck the United States. Weathermen of the US Army and Navy named the hurricanes after womens names during World War II. One of their duties was to warn American ships and planes when a storm was coming. Whenever they detected （探測） one， they gave it a girls name. The first one was given a name beginning with A. The second one was given a name beginning with B. They used all the letters from A to W. This was the first list of hurricane names that followed the alphabet.

Junelle Lynch knocked on more than 200 doors in the Gayln Manor neighborhood of Brunswick in recent weeks. Her aim is to collect hundreds of pounds of food for the Brunswick Food Bank.

“I like helping people a lot，” said Junelle， who celebrated her 11th birthday in June.

With the support of her parents Isabella and Robert， Junelle walked along the streets with an orange grocery bag. Isabella always accompanies （陪伴） her daughter. Isabella helps her daughter by car， so Junelle can empty her grocery bag when it becomes heavy. Junelles friend， Destiny Williams， helped the first night， but she didnt turn up the rest of the time.

Neighbor Lynda Mallory donated （捐獻(xiàn)） food to Junelle. Mallory dropped noodles， canned soup， vegetables and fruits into Junelles bag. After visiting the last house and looking at what she collected， Junelle said she felt good about what she achieved with the help of her neighbors.

Working an hour a night three times per week， she has collected more than 400 pounds of canned and boxed food. This isnt the first year shes collected food. Junelle started nearly three years ago when， at 8 years old， she saw a collection box at a grocery store and decided to become involved. In her first year， she collected 80 pounds of food in the mostly undeveloped neighborhood， and 214 pounds the next year. The food helped feed many families.

When she isnt helping， Junelle is a straight-A student who goes snowboarding， plays the trumpet， sings with the Brunswick Chorus， plays basketball and writes poems. She plans on spending her summer vacation attending a basketball camp.
