Ban Xia(Rhizoma Pinelliae)comes from throat healing prescription which recorded in Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases.Lian Qiao(Fructus Forsythiae)is recorded in Yin Qiao powder.It is originally an untitled Traditional Chinese Medicine recipe.

Composition

Jiang Ban Xia(Rhizome Pinelliae Fermentata)30g,Lian Qiao(Fructus Forsythiae)30g

Directions

The herbs are decocted with 500ml water and concentrated to 200ml.The patients between the ages of five and twelve take one-third-dose,while twelve years old and over take the whole dose.Ban Xia Lian Qiao Tang(BXLQT)is taken twice daily,half an hour after meals while the decoction is warm.BXLQT also can be made as granules,which are taken with the same method.Mild cases take three days,while serious cases take seven days to recover sore throat and throat discomfort.

Indications

This prescription is mainly applied to treat all kinds of sore throat and throat discomfort,which are named sore throat,globus hysteriocus and sore throat dumb in Traditional Chines Medicine,and pharyngitis in Western Medicine.Herbs can be added according to the differentiation of diseases and syndrome for the external and internal diseases.

Contraindications

The patients who are less than 5 years old are not recommended to take the BXLQT.Women who want to conceive or are pregnant,especially during the first trimester of pregnancy,should not take the BXLQT.

Formula analysis

Ban Xia(Rhizoma Pinelliae)comes from throat healing prescription which is in Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases.Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae)is from Yin Qiao powder.Syndrome Differentiation and Pulse of Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases demonstrates that ShaoYin Disease with symptoms of throat damage,sore and ulcer,aphonia should be treated by KuJiu Decoction while ShaoYin Disease with pharyngalgia and floating pulse should be treated by Ban Xia Powder and Decoction.

Female feeling dry meat sensation in throat can be treated by Ban Xia Hou Po Decoction which is in Chapter 22 of Syndrome Differentiation and Pulse of Synopsis of Golden Chamber,On pulse syndrome complex and treatment of miscellaneous gynecological diseases.

Yin Qiao powder comes from Treatise on Differentiation and Treatment of Epidemic Febrile Disease written by Wu Jutong,and it mainly helps wind-warm syndrome, warm-heat syndrome,pestilence,winter warm syndrome with fever and thirsty sensation but not aversion to cold.Warm disease of TaiYin with aversion to cold should treated by GuiZhi Decoction first,then by YinQiao Decoction when cold stops.Original formula:Lian Qiao(Fructus Forsythiae)37g,Yin Hua(Flos Lonicerae)37g,Ku Jie Geng(Radix Platycodonis)22g,Zhu Ye(Herba Lophatheri)15g,Sheng Gan Cao(Radix Glycyrrhizae)19g,Jing Jie Sui(Herba Schizonepetae)15g,Dan Dou Chi(Semen Sojae)19g,Niu Bang Zi(Fructus Arctii)22g.The medicines mentioned above are decocted in Lu Gen(Rhizoma Phragmitis)soup.Yin Hua and Lian Qiao are drugs with pungent and cool nature specializing in relieving superficial syndrome,clearing heat and removing toxicity.

This prescription consists of Ban Xia(Rhizome Pinelliae Fermentata) and Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae),which denoted warm and cold attribution,respectively.The combination of herbs has synergistic effect to improve the symptoms in throat.According to the prior clinical experience and research,this prescription can reduce more than 90%of throat discomfort, regardless of cold-heat and deficiency-excess.However,to avoid the adverse effect,this prescription should not be administered with long duration.In addition,flexible modification will be available for other symptoms.For the treatment of pharyngodynia,the proper dosage using for instant effect is 30g(less than 30g may delay the onset time;more than 30g will not improve the effect significantly).Yinhua(Flos Lonicerae)has not been applied in this prescription for controlling the medical costs.
