I like to set an environment where people know exactly what is required with a focus on quality of output. I aim to provide clear leadership but encourage discussion and feedback. I'm a pretty direct person and I don't like to waste time. As an FD, there are a lot of exciting opportunities to lead the development of the business. However, it's essential to always ensure that the core processes and controls are working properly and efficiently first. It's impossible to move forward if those fundamentals aren't right.

“I’m not going to be as excited about a new venture if it’s not going to make any money,” Gerrard says bluntly. “Most of them don’t in the early years and that’s fine; we model it like that. We’ve got set investment criteria, and I guess that’s another place where finance plays its part: in controlling the investment decision. They have to meet the criteria.

Traditionally, the finance function has been relegated to keeping score, according to Holland. “I’m very operational minded, very entrepreneurial spirited, and so I want to be involved in helping to drive the future of the business” rather than just overseeing finance, he says. “You bring a lot more value by being outside of the financial domain.”
