New fish discovered in deepest place on earth

University of Hawaii（夏威夷大學） researchers have discovered a new kind of fish that lives near the bottom of the Mariana Trench， the deepest place on Earth.

Jeff Drazen and Patty Fryer discovered the fish when it was caught on camera several times at a depth of 8，143 metres （26，715 feet）. Until now， the deepest living fish （the Pseudoliparis amblystompsis）， a kind of snailfish （獅子魚）， has held the record for deepest-living fish at 7，703 metres （25，272 feet）.

This new kind of fish is also believed to be a snailfish， which lives in very deep waters. However， its body shape is very different from that of known snailfish， so it could be a new type of fish altogether.

“We think it is a snailfish， but its so strange-looking; ” said Alan Jamieson of the University of Aberdeen. “It is easily broken， and when it swims， it looks as if it has something like wet paper moving slowly on water behind it. And it has a strange long nose— it looks like a cartoon dog nose.”

Its certainly not a fish anyone has ever seen before.

Shallow （淺的） water fish are built much differently from deep water fish because the deep sea has a lot of water pressure. Deep sea fish have high levels of a chemical （化學物質） in their bodies. This chemical keeps proteins （蛋白質） from losing their shape as water pressure increases.

According to a study by Jamieson， other fish shouldnt be able to hold enough such chemicals in their bodies to live at the depth like this fish， so this living thing could end up being a record holder forever！
