Research on the Application of Chinese Traditional Culture Art Elements in Modern Graphic Design

【Abstract】Thousands of years of Chinese culture are of long standing,extensive and profound.Speaking of culture,art is inevitable.Our graphic arts development history is different from that of the west.Those countries experienced the Industrial Revolution and Renaissance,so their graphic design artistic achievement is quite high.Compared with them,our development road of graphic design is of too much up and down.Thus,the basic elements of traditional culture and modern graphic design characters need to be analyzed and integrated well in order to exhibit the unique charm of our art culture.[1]

Every ethnic group has its own thought and culture.They are the wisdom of generations of people and their hard work.In the past thousands of years,Chinese people never ceased to explore and pursue art culture.That is how the brilliant ethnic culture today forms.Science and technology improving constantly,so is art culture.Only when traditional culture and art perfectly combines with modern graphic design,can our ethnic culture be more special.

I.The Application of Traditional Pattern in Modern Graphic Design

In the process of our countrys development,patterning is of long history.It is the various patterns that make our traditional culture eye dazzling.Pattern is an indispensible part of traditional culture.From ancient times to the present,pattern runs through peoples cultural life and it has close relation with so many aspects.In particular,it plays an increasingly significant role in modern graphic design.[2]

From the perspective of modern costume design history,many designers home and abroad take Chinese traditional patterns into their design because they can compromise the noisy and impetuous feeling in a lot of designs nowadays,and bring you back to simplicity and nature.Thats a fantastic artistic conception that you believe life should be free and easy.[5]

Every ethnic group has its own distinctive culture which is shown in these patterns.Our ethnic culture is inseparable to art and culture of the world,and it is also the foundation of plenty of artistic culture designs.It demonstrates the profound culture deposits of Chinese ethnic peoples and conforms to the global culture development trend.[3]In the times of high demand on material and spirit,modern designers not only need to learn new concepts and probe into the vital role the composing element of traditional culture plays,but also study the fashionable culture design of the world with better state of mind.We have to absorb their essence and integrate them with ethnic feature to turn on their unique artistic charm.

II.The Application of Traditional Character in Modern Graphic Design

With the start of human civilization,word art appears.We can say characters emerge in the process of human development are attractive.Characters for a long time are endowed with strong vitality.They not only bear history,but decorate peoples life and make life not tedious any more.They are the source of inspiration of a number of designers and are used in plenty of design by many designers.For instance,enterprises LOGO,brand design,and radio LOGO.Numerous excellent works have character element.[4]Below are two practical examples.

Beijing Olympic Games emblem successfully integrates Chinese traditional culture with modern graphic design.The symbol looks like a man of light gait and dancing with wind and he is welcoming foreign friends all over the world.The symbol in red embodies that Chinese people are enthusiastic and industrious,and they proactively bid to hold the Olympics,and they make efforts for the successful 2008 Olympic Games.See Figure 1.

The 16th Guangzhou Asian Games which had attracted domestic attentions was held in Guangzhou.The emblem of the Games must leave a deep impression on many people,as it makes breakthrough.People feel hard to figure out the exact meaning of the abstract figures in the past.However,what the designer wants to express can be understood from the emblem of the Games.In the aspect of vision,the line design of the emblem is smooth.It looks vivid but rational.The connection between points and lines are natural,so the word brings to life.This design shows strong urban culture ambience and it fuses Chinese culture with humanistic thought so as to reflect Olympic spirit and ethnic culture.[6]See Figure 2

Conclusion

By means of researching on modern graphic design and Chinese traditional artistic element,we cant help but be proud of our splendid culture.However,as the time progresses,we cant be satisfied with artistic achievement we have obtained,as we will lag behind if we dont head on.We,in this contemporary era,must follow up science and technology development and continue our exploration on Chinese traditional culture with the help of science and technology development platform to achieve more research finding in the field of Chinese character form.Because the Chinese character culture is an integral part of Culture of China,the study on Chinese character has become an important topic in design field; all of us are working hard to make the application range of Chinese character wider.Only in this way,shall the traditional art elements be used better and contribute more in the development of Chinese graphic design.[7]
