For years, Microsoft knew that lots of people hated Internet Explorer. In 2012, the company launched an ad campaign acknowledging that fact.
Microsoft Ad: The only thing it’s good for, at all, is downloading other browsers.
That approach didn’t work. And this week, Microsoft’s 1)Chris Capossela announced that the next version of Windows will have something new.
Chris: Today, I’m excited to introduce you to—code name: Project Spartan, web browsing experience for Windows 10.
Spartan will come with a personal web assistant, a special reading mode and new 2)annotation tools. Kristina Monllos writes for AdWeek, and she says Microsoft has a lot of work ahead to make people forgive the company for IE.
Kristina: The Internet Explorer brand is so 3)tainted. When you think of Internet Explorer, the first thing you think of is that it’s slow.
Monllos says Microsoft has to prove that Spartan is different.
Kristina: They don’t want people to see it as if they’re just 4)putting lipstick on the Internet Explorer pig.
I did find someone who was sad to hear IE is going away.
Kim Kauer (Small Business Owner): It freaks me out. Sam Sanders (Reporter): Why?
Kim: Well, because it’s all I use, and I don’t like change.
Kim Kauer runs two small businesses in Michigan. She says IE is fast enough, and it’s the only browser that’s compatible with all her accounting software. Current software with IE stays the same, and in the new Windows, there’ll be a version of IE to work with older programs. But Kauer says she still gonna mourn. Sam: How are you gonna get through your sadness?
Kim: I’m thinking a good 5)martini with 6)anchovy olives would be appropriate.
An Internet Explorer-tini, sounds good to me.
