Every country tends to (趨向于) accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others, as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of other people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted (扭曲的) one.

Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in a country and getting to know its inhabitants and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gets this way frequently turns out to be from the second-hand information collected from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different at all!

Differences between peoples do, of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs (事件). With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However this may be, at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not some different kind of living beings from themselves.

Do you always forget where you placed your keys or your purse? What was the name of the movie you saw last week? The major cause of your forgetfulness may be linked to what you store in your body, not in your short-term memory bank.

Tests continue to show that people with enough Vitamin B-2 do well in memory exams. The “B” could stand for “brain”, if youre one of many with limited instant memory. And the number one source of that vitamin is sunflower seeds (種子).

Even when youre sleeping or relaxing, your brain is still at work. Although it makes up just two percent of your total body weight, it uses up to 30% of the calories (卡路里) you take in each day. For it to work properly, it must be fed. Even if youre not a breakfast eater, that meal is the best way to prepare your brain for the day. A quick and easy English muffin with peanut and butter in it, a glass of milk, and an orange, might be what your brain may be asking you the first thing in the morning when you feel your head is in a fog. Having sunflower seeds and fruit between meals adds more muscle (肌肉) to that hungry, demanding organ. Vitamin B-1 also helps the memory, and that is found in eggs, meats and nuts. In Chinese culture, walnuts are known as the fruit for a long life because it is believed that they feed both the kidneys and the brain. And according to Chinese culture, if you keep those two important organs in good working order youll live longer.

However forgetful you are, just keep in mind the letter “B”, which will help you to “bear in mind almost everything” even on those days when lifes challenges are sending you in a billion directions.

4. The underlined word “muffin” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to a kind of ___ .

A. menu B. dinner

C. calorie D. cookie

5. In the passage, Chinese culture is mentioned to ___ .

A. support the idea of long life

B. tell readers to protect the two organs

C. show the importance of vitamin B-1

D. remind us of walnuts and sunflower seeds

6. What can we conclude from the passage?

A. What we eat seems more important than what we learn in terms of memory.

B. Two percent of our brain is still active when we are sleeping or relaxing.

C. It doesnt make much difference to our brain whether we have breakfast or not.

D. Lifes challenges have no effect on our memory, if dealt with in a proper way.

7. What could be the best title for the passage?

A. Memory Loss of Human

B. Vitamin B-2 and Memory

C. Forgetful? But not Brain

D. Chinese Culture of Long Life

Walking is a popular form of exercise. It is an easy activity and offers a good way to improve physical (兩葉肺) fitness. Walking also gives many of the same benefits as other kinds of exercise.

Regular, brisk (輕快的) walk helps a persons body work better. Walking builds a stronger heart and lungs. The heart pumps blood through the body. It gets more rest between beats. Walking also seems to help protect the heart from heart diseases. The lungs work better because they take in and use oxygen more effectively. Walking can help in weight control, too. A quick fifteen-minute walk burns as many calories as jogging the same distance in half the time. Walking causes very few injuries. So there is also a lower “dropout” rate among walkers than among runners. People are more likely to continue a walking program. This gives a better chance for success.

Walking offers some mental benefits, too. It seems to make people feel better. Many walkers say they sleep better at night when they take regular walks. Others say they have a better attitude to life.

Walking offers many of the same physical and mental benefits as other forms of exercise, but walking offers some special advantages, too.

★ Almost everyone can walk. There are no special lessons of coaching. To become a serious walker, a person only needs to walk faster, farther and more often.

★ People can walk almost anywhere. There are no special playing fields or courts for walking. Sidewalks, streets, parks, fields and malls are excellent places for walking.

★ People can walk almost anytime. A person doesnt need a team or a partner for walking. There is no “season” for walking. Most walkers walk in all kinds of weather.

★ Walking doesnt cost anything. There are no special fees for walking. Good walking shoes and comfortable clothes are the only equipment that a walker needs.
