Erosion is usually considered a negative and uncontrollable process that one wishes did not affect buildings. There are scenarios however where a naturally degrading material composition can be of practical and the experiential benefit for a building. This project for a public bath in S?o Paulo aims to provide a 10 year designed life cycle for a temporal architecture. The project involves built structures design to last ten years that nest other structures designed to partly erode annually to achieve a perforated state for summer as semioutdoor architecture. These elements are able to be repaired after the summer months in time for winter only to repeat the process the following summer. By developing a custom erosion simulation software that was calibrated by running physical erosion tests in parallel, an accurate prediction of erosion is made possible. Designs were developed that provided interesting poolside spaces where water erosion transformed interior and exterior architecture. The building would gain articulation over time, recording its history within its construction adding another design quality to the proposal that arises over time. As a time based process, erosion was incorporated into the building to aid the transformation of construction and accommodate the changing of activities In relation to the seasons. Pools could be indoors in winter and open in summer. A natural process is harnessed for creative design potentials.
