Massachusetts today looks nothing like it did when the first English settlers arrived. Back in the 17th century, forest covered the land. Today, roads and towns cover much of the area. But the past is not dead and gone. Just an hours drive from Boston lies Plimoth Plantation(種植園).

There youll experience the 17th century life from the days of the Pilgrims (清教徒移民). You can look in the Pilgrims homes, watch the way they cook, and ask them about their daily life. You can even help them build houses or work in the fields.

When you arrive at Plimoth, you are greeted with “How do you fare?” instead of “How are you?” In this living history plantation, actors act real people of 17th-century Plimoth. Each actor has taken the identity of someone from that period.

All the actors speak the language of Shakespeare. Theyre happy to talk about the hardships of their life or just share the chatting of the day. But dont try to discuss modern topics. They wont understand what you are talking about!

In fall, you can enjoy a harvest dinner very similar to the first Thanksgiving. Youll have meals with your hands like Pilgrims. Youll find no pepper on the table. This expensive spice is used only economically in cooking.

Cranberries were on the menu before and still are today. A short distance from Plimoth, you can visit Cranberry World. At this unique museum, youll see how cranberries are harvested and can taste different cranberry products.

Of course, the first Thanksgiving included not only the Pilgrims, but also their Wampanoag guests. If you want to find out something about the Wampanoag, explore a recreated Wampanoag Homesite. It is just a short walk from Plimoth. Step into the Native American home and enter a different world. Native Americans dress in 17th-century Wampanoag clothes which describe how their people lived 400 years ago. Outside, you can help make a traditional boat or learn about native plant remedies(治療法).

Much in Massachusetts has changed since the 17th century. But in Plimoth, the past lives on.

People travel for a lot of reasons. Some tourists go to see battlefields or religious shrines(宗教勝地). Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their pictures taken in front of famous places. But most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.

Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money and put up with a lot of inconveniences for the sun because they have so little of it. People in cities like London, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam spend a lot of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year is in the rain. This is the reason the Mediterranean(地中海)has always attracted them. Every summer, more than 25 million people travel to Mediterranean resorts and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: sun!

The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economies of Mediterranean countries. Italys 30,000 hotels are full every summer. And 13 million people camp out on French beaches, parks and roadsides. Spains long sandy coastline attracts more people than anywhere else. 37 million tourists visit yearly, or one tourist for every person living in Spain.

But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can handle. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. And with increased tourism, its getting worse. The French cant figure out what to do with all the rubbish left by campers around St Tropez. And in many places, swimming is dangerous because of pollution.

None of this, however, is spoiling(破壞)anyones fun. The Mediterranean gets more popular every year with tourists. Obviously, they dont go there for clean water. They tolerate(容忍)traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They dont even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, its still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London or Oslo.

When one student does so, much largest values are destroying. One may not agree to examination system, but at present it is basically the only measure that the teachers can depend on it. It is universally true that all parents in the world love their children. However, as parents views of life vary, they show their love in different ways. Generally speaking, parents can be classified into three types, the monarch(君主)type, the servant type, and the friend type according to their different ways of showing their love to their children.

The monarch type parents are intolerant and self-centered. They lay down regulations in the family for their children to observe. Furthermore, they insist that their children should obey them without question. When their authority is challenged, they become angry. With a firm belief in their own principles of life, they have little respect for others opinions, least of all, their childrens. The sentence they say most frequently to their children is, “You should do this.”

Contrary to the monarch type parents, the servant type parents circle around their children all the time. They are soft, and easy-going. They never deny their children any wish and cheerfully run to buy anything their children ask for. They are happy so long as their children are content. With the sincere belief that love means sacrifice, they are ready to give up anything for their childrens sake. With their children at the center of their lives, they always ask “What else can we do for you?”

The friend type parents, as the term implies, treat their children as friends. They are generous and wise. Like good friends, they discuss with their children the latest news, share their childrens interests, and listen attentively to their childrens expression of emotion, whether it is anger, fear, joy or sorrow. They have a close relationship with their children while sticking to their principled stand. They discuss problems with their children rather than provide ready solutions. They respect their children as their equals. They often say, “Lets put our heads together and see what we can do.”

There is no doubt that children welcome the third type of parents, for a free, friendly, and sympathetic atmosphere at home is most favorable to the development of youngsters both in body and in mind. All parents should reexamine and change some of their ways of showing their love if they want their children to grow up happily and healthily.
