第三部分 閱讀理解(共兩節,滿分40分)

第一節(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

Often speakers at a meeting experience dry mouths and ask for a glass of water. You can solve the problem by activating the saliva[唾液] in your mouth. First gently bite the edges of your tongue with your teeth. Or, press your entire tongue to the bottom of your mouth and hold it there until the saliva flows. Or you can imagine that you are slicing a big juicy lemon and sucking the juice.

Before you begin your talk, be kind to your voice. Avoid milk or creamy drinks which coat your throat. Keep your throat wet by drinking a little sweetened warm tea or fruit juice.

If you sense that you are losing your voice, stop talking completely. Save your voice for your speech. You may feel foolish using paper to write notes, but the best thing you can do is to rest your voice. If you need to see a doctor, perhaps you can get some advice from a professional singer. In the meantime, do not even talk in a low voice.

What about drinking alcohol to wet your throat? I advice you not to touch alcohol before speaking. The problem with alcohol is that one drink gives you a little confidence. The second drink gives you even more confidence. Finally you will feel all powerful and you will feel you can do everything, but in fact your brain and your mouth do not work together properly. Save the alcohol until after you finish speaking.

Perhaps you want to accept the advice, but you may wonder if you can ever change the habits of a lifetime. Of course you can. Goethe, who lived before indoor skating rinks[溜冰場] or swimming pools, said, “We learn to skate in the summer and swim in the winter”. Take this message to heart and give yourself time to develop you new habits. If you are willing to change, you will soon be able to say that you will never forget these techniques because they became a part of your body.

56. When you feel you are losing your voice, the writer suggests that you should __________.

A. rest your voice

B. drink some alcohol

C. ask a singer to teach you how to protect your voice

D. never go to see a doctor

57. What is the writer’s advice about alcohol before you give a speech?

A. Drink a little of it to feel all-powerful.

B. Don’t drink it.

C. Mix it with water.

D. Drink it two hours before you make a speech.

58. Why does the writer speak of Goethe’s words?

A. To prove one can change one’s habits.

B. To tell that Goethe had a strong will power.

C. To encourage one to go in for sports.

D. To demonstrate Goethe was creative.

59. In the author’s opinion, to change a habit is __________.

A. very difficult B. very easy

C. completely impossible D. hard but possible

B

In a new study about the way kids learn math in elementary school, the psychologists at the University of Chicago found a surprising relationship between what female teachers think and what female students learn: If a female teacher is not confident of her own math skills, then her female students are more likely to believe that boys are better than girls at math.

If these girls keep getting math anxious female teachers in later grades, it may create a snowball effect on their math achievement said Levine. In other words, girls may end up learning math anxiety from their teachers. The study suggests that if these girls grow up believing that boys are better at math than girls are, then these girls may not do as well as they would have if they were more confident.

Just as students find certain subjects to be difficult, teachers can find certain subjects to be difficult to learn and teach. The subject of math can be particularly difficult for everyone. Researchers use the word “anxiety” to describe such feelings: anxiety is uneasiness or worry.

The new study found that when a teacher has anxiety about math, that feeling can influence how her female students feel about math. The study involved 65 girls, 52 boys and 17 first and second grade teachers in elementary schools in the Midwest. The students took math achievement tests at the beginning and end of the school year, and the researchers compared the scores.

The researchers also gave the students tests to tell whether the students believed that a math superstar had to be a boy. Then the researchers turned to the teachers: To find out which teachers were anxious about math, the researchers asked the teachers how they felt at times when they came across math, such as when reading a sales receipt. A teacher who got nervous looking at the numbers on a sales receipt, for example, was probably anxious about math.

Boys, on average, were unaffected by a teacher’s anxiety. On average, girls with math anxious teachers scored lower on the end of the year math tests than other girls in the study did.

60. According to the first paragraph, the psychologists think __________.

A. girls confident of their own math skills are better than boys at math

B. girls not confident of their own math skills are not as good as boys at math

C. female teachers’math skills have influence over girl students’math skills

D. female teachers’confidence in their math skills is related to girl’s math skills

61. According to the experiment in the fifth paragraph, those teachers were probably anxious about math when they felt __________.

A. nervous memorizing the numbers of a sales receipt

B. helpless saving the numbers of a sales receipt

C. uneasy reading the numbers of a sales receipt

D. hopeless filling in the numbers of a sales report

62. The underlined words “math superstar” refers to __________.

A. a famous actor or actress good at match

B. a great math teacher

C. a student who is very good at math

D. a student who acts as a math teacher

63.Which of the following can best act as a title of the passage?

A. Teaching math, teaching anxiety

B. Boys and girls learning math

C. Math anxiety

D. Math teachers’anxiety

C

“Clean your plate!” and “Be a member of the clean plate club!” Just about every kid in the US has heard this from a parent or grandparent. Often, it’s accompanied by an appeal: “Just think about those starving orphans in Africa!” Sure, we should be grateful for every bite of food. Unfortunately, many people in the US take too many bites. Instead of staying “clean the plate”, perhaps we should save some food for tomorrow.

According to news reports, US restaurants are partly to blame for the growing stomachs. A waiter puts a plate of food in front of each customer, with two to four times the amount recommended by the government, according to a USA Today story. Americans traditionally associate quantity with value and most restaurants try to give them that. They prefer to have customers complain about too much food rather than too little.

Barbara Rolls, a nutrition professor at Pennsylvania State University, told USA Today that restaurant portion sizes began to grow in the 1970s, the same time that the American waistline began to expand.

Health experts have tried to get many restaurants to serve smaller portions. Now, apparently, some customers are calling for this too. But many Americans who can’t afford fine dining still prefer large portions. Seventy percent of those earning at least $150,000 per year prefer smaller portions; but only 45 percent of those earning less than $25,000 want smaller.

It’s not that working class Americans don’t want to eat healthy. It’s just that, after long hours at low paying jobs, getting less on their plate hardly seems like a good deal. They live from paycheck to paycheck, happy to save a little money for next year’s Christmas presents.

64. Parents in the United States tend to ask their children __________.

A. to save food B. to wash the dishes

C. not to waste food D. not to eat too much

65. Why do American restaurants serve large portions?

A. Because Americans associate quantity with value.

B. Because Americans have big stomachs.

C. Because Americans are good eaters.

D. Because Americans are greedy.

66. What can you infer happened in the 1970s?

A. The US government recommended the amount of food a restaurant gave to a customer.

B. Health experts persuaded restaurants to serve smaller portions.

C. The United States produced more grain than needed.

D. Most Americans start to become fat.

67. Which of the following is NOT true of working class Americans?

A. They work long hours.

B. They live from paycheck to paycheck.

C. They don’t want to be healthy eaters.

D. They want to save money for their children.

D

All we have a clock located inside our brains. Similar to your bedside alarm clock, your internal clock runs on a 24 hour cycle. This cycle, called a circadian rhythm[生理節奏], helps control when you wake, when you eat and when you sleep.

Somewhere around puberty[青春期], something happens in the timing of the biological clock. The clock pushes forward, so adolescents and teenagers are unable to fall asleep as early as they used to. When your mother tells you it’s time for bed, your body may be pushing you to stay up for several hours more. And the light coming from your computer screen or TV could be pushing you to stay up even later.

This shift is natural for teenagers. But staying up very late and sleeping late can get your body’s clock out of sync[同步] with the cycle of light and dark. It can also make it hard to get out of bed in the morning and may bring other problems, too. Teenagers are put in a kind of a gray cloud when they don’t get enough sleep. And it affects their mood and their ability to think and learn.

But just like your alarm clock, your internal clock can be reset. In fact, it automatically resets itself every day. How? By using the light it gets through your eyes.

Recent discoveries show that the human eye has two separate light sensing systems. One system allows us to see. The second system tells our body whether it’s day or night.

68. The clock located inside our brains is similar to our bedside alarm clock because __________.

A. it controls when we wake, when we eat and when we sleep

B. it has a cycle of 24 hours

C. it is a cycle also called circadian rhythm

D. it can alarm any time during 24 hours

69. When the teenagers are in a gray cloud, they usually tend to __________.

A. work or study less efficiently because they can’t think clearly

B. go to bed earlier due to the change of the biological clock

C. imagine that they are floating above the clouds and feel nervous

D. go to bed later than they used to due to the light from the computer screen

70. According to the passage, people can adjust their circadian rhythms by __________.

A. pushing forward or backward their clock

B. controlling the light coming into their eyes

C. turning off the secondlight sensing system

D. playing computer games or watching TV

第二節(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

根據短文內容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

Teach Your Child Science

It is important to make your child interested in science from an early age. Most young children ask a lot of questions and you should give careful scientific answers.____71____

Science is not just knowledge; it is a way of thinking, a method of finding out about the world. We see something. We try to explain it, and we test our idea by setting up an experiment.____72____ You think it might be the wind from the open window or the cat, so you close the window, but leave the cat in and see what happens (you can also try leaving the window open and shutting the cat out). Of course, you remember there may be a third explanation.

Ask your child to get a piece of string, some salt, a glass of water and an ice cube. Tell her to put the ice in the water, and then put one end of the string on the ice, leaving the other end over the side of the glass. ____73____Wait a minute, and then pull the string; it should be attached to the ice. Ask the child: “What has happened?”

Probably she won’t know. ____74____ If you live near the sea and have a cold winter, she should know fresh water freezes first as she will have seen that happen. Show her how to test the idea by half filling two paper cups with water, adding salt to one. Then put them in the icebox and check every three minutes. Write the results in a table. ____75____ thinking about the string, we see the salt turned some of the ice into water. Then the salt went away into the water and the ice froze again leaving the string attached.

Then you can ask, “Will water with salt boil at the same temperature as water without salt?” She can think, tell you her idea and (taking care because of the heat) you can test it in the kitchen.

A. Ask her whether fresh water or salt water freezes into ice first.

B. Pour a small amount of ice into the water.

C. Don’t only give facts, but try to give explanations as well.

D. The conclusion will be that salt changes the behaviour of water.

E. She will have to remember all the facts and explanations.

F. Put a little salt on the ice.

G. One day you come home and find the plant on the table has fallen over.
