In recent days, traffic accidents happen often. Many people are injured, disabled or even killed in traffic accidents. The great loss of life and property has a lasting effect on the whole society.

After the discussion about the phenomenon in our class, we share the opinion that usually traffic accidents are closely related to the drivers who break the traffic rules and regulations, drive too fast or even drive after drinking wine. But sometimes people ignoring traffic rules leads to traffic accidents as well.

Personally, I think, people should obey the traffic rules and regulations and build up a sense of self—protection. Only then can we enjoy a safe life.

Dear Miss Chris,

I am so sorry that I won’t be able to attend the lecture on American history tomorrow afternoon. My uncle is returning home from France, and I have promised to meet him at the airport at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon.

I am very much interested in American society and history. I wonder if it is possible for the talk to be recorded, and if so, could I borrow the tape? It would mean a great deal to me to listen to the tape and learn what is covered in the lecture.

Yours sincerely,

Zhang Hua

My name is Li Li, a girl of 17, studying at Santai Middle School. I take great interest in outdoor activities and exciting things, as a result of which I have formed such hobbies as traveling, doing sports, learning English as well as listening to music. When I graduate from senior high, my greatest wish is to be accepted by a certain college of tourism so that my talent can be made full use of. I think the program “Learn More about Each Other” is just the opportunity for me to learn more about American culture, to improve my spoken English and the friendship between the students of our two countries, which will be extremely useful in my future career.

Failure Comes before Success

Middle school students experience happiness of success and sadness of failure after each test. And they take two different attitudes towards failure.

20% of them feel low—spirited once they fail, usually losing hope and no longer studying as hard as before. However, 80% take an active attitude—they have strong self—confidence in themselves, making still more efforts to find out and analyze the causes to avoid making similar mistakes again.

I quite appreciate those with active attitudes. As a saying goes, failure comes before success. It doesn’t matter that one fails but it really matters that one does something to get out of the sadness and work bravely on for success.

The Importance of Self—confidence

Many facts proved that self—confidence is a quality we should have, and also a key factor to success.

To me, self—confidence is the trust in one’s own ability to do a task. Generally speaking, the more self—confident you are, the more successful you tend to be.

Whatever you do, you should do it with self—confidence. When you are self—confident of your ability, you will not give up hope easily. On the other hand, if you have no self—confidence, there is little possibility of achieving the goal in anything you want, especially when faced with difficulties.

You can build up self—confidence by developing a good attitude toward your own abilities. Self—confidence, combined with hard work, leads to success, which in turn gives you more self—confidence.

Which Is More Important, Scores or Practical Abilities?

Some schools pay more attention to scores, while other schools attach more importance to practical abilities.

Some schools believe that students’ task is to study, and only from teachers and textbooks can they get good scores. They are afraid that those practical activities will affect students’ study.

However, some schools think that practical abilities are of greater importance. Students should gain knowledge not only from books but also from society. Society needs excellent students but not high scores with low practical abilities.

In my opinion, we must first study hard, but we should not neglect the development of our practical abilities. If we have only book knowledge, it will be hard for us to adapt quickly to the future society.
