Did you ever hear of such interesting thing as American English1 The first time I hear of it.

I was curious. Now I know that there are different ways English is spoken. English is said to be an international language. Many people from many countries speak it. In the same way that Chinese has many dialects， so in English people from different parts speak a little bit differently from one another.

I know from my teacher， in Britain people speak and talk in British English. In America， people speak in American English. Of course the people can understand each other well. The difference is not very big. In the world there are other people who speak English. They talk in a way not exactly the same as the British or American English. British English spelling is not completely the same as the American English. They sometimes use different words. Take an example， British people use word\"autumn\" to express what the people in the US mean\"fall2\". The intonation3 is also different. The American speak English in more exaggerated4 way. Now some people argue5 that English language is changing a lot. The pace of change is in America. The reason is that America is having a greater influence on the world.

I have learned a lot from this differences. It helps me to realize that what language a nation speaks， the identity of a people is surely in it. We can learn a lot not only from the way they speak， but also we can learn a lot about the culture of a nation from the language they speak.

The Sounds Animals Make

Animals make sounds. Different animals make the sounds different from each other. In English I read some words that are used to describe how the animals make sounds. In Chinese we have special words to tell the sound that puppy， kitty， chicken， wolf make. In the same way in English there are words for different sounds different animals make.

Recently， mother bought me a CD record1 . On it a beautiful teacher gives lessons. One of the lessons is on how animals make sound. My mother knows English well， and she helped me to write down those words on the record.

A dog \"barks2\". A wolf \"howls\" to make sounds. When elephant makes the loud sound to show it is happy or angry， it \"trumpets3'' The kitty\"meows\"， and sheep\"baas\" . A horse \"whinnies\"4 in the barn. These are sounds animals make. So every word has a different meaning. We must not confuse them. We cannot say a dog meows. That will cause the loss of face.

I find that to study English through radio or VCD is a very effective way. On the screen， you can see pictures. You can hear the sound or even story to go with5 it. When they tell the sounds animals make you see the dog and hear how it \"barks\". You hear the sound ducks make in the same time the teacher is teaching the word \"quacks\". They even have a funny song to make you memorize these words easily. You feel like talking in English in such atmosphere. You are placed in an English world. Your English-learning experience is made very interesting.

The Happiness of Reading books

People often say that gold and silver1 are the most valuable things in the world. But I'd like to say that books are more valuable than anything else， because books give us knowledge and knowledge gives us power.

Books are our friends and teachers. They introduce us to different kinds of knowledge and show us the way out when we are in difficulty. They tell us stories of every country in the world and of all ages. They teach us truth， science， literature and so on. Besides， they enlarge our experience，strengthen2 our character and do many other things which we can not do without them.

As life is complex3 there are many which are necessary to learn and many which are to be avoided. By reading books we have the ability to tell what is good and what is bad. In this sense， books are not only our teacher but also our protecter. They protect us from the bad and guide us to the good.

\"To open a book is always beneficial4 \"is an old Chinese saying. It is completely true.
