一、用法歸納

what引導名詞性從句時,作連接代詞,即復合關系代詞,意思是“所……的事物/人”, 相當于the thing(s) / people that..., that which...或those which..., 即先行詞+關系代詞。

二、用法講解

1. 引導主語從句。請試做下面的高考題:

1. ______ was most important to her, she told me, was her family. (08·山東)

2. ______ is known to us all is that the 2008 Olympic Games will take place in Beijing. (08·福建)

A. It B. What C. As D. Which

答案與解析:1-2 CB。 以上兩道考題的答案都選what, 兩個what從句均為主語從句,what 在從句中作主語,表示“……的事”。 注意:第1小題中的she told me是插入語。第2小題中,如去掉is ,則答案為A; 若把is和that都去掉,且加上逗號,答案就是C了。

又如:What was once regarded as impossiblehas now become a reality.

過去認為不可能的事現在已成為現實。

What really matters is the way he deals with dangerous things.

真正有關系的是他處理危險事情的方式。

2. 引導表語從句。請試做下面的高考題:

答案與解析:1-2 DA。第1、2小題中,what引導的都是表語從句,并在從句中分別作賓語和表語。另外,第2小題中,when引導的是定語從句。

3. 引導賓語從句,包括介詞的賓語。請試做下面的高考題:

答案與解析:1-5 AACCA。第1、3小題中,what 引導的兩個賓語從句都作動詞的賓語,在從句中它們分別作賓語和主語。注意:第1小題中When asked = When they were asked;第3小題中的 they hope是插入語。第2、4、5小題中,what 引導的賓語從句都作介詞的賓語,在從句中它們分別作動詞speak,achieve 和do or think的賓語。
