牛年說牛

“牛年”譯為 the year of the ox。“我屬牛”譯為I was born in the year of the ox．

牛是 cow, cattle。一群牛是 a herd of cattle。五頭牛是 five cows。公牛是 bull。閹牛是 steer, ox。母牛是 cow。不再產奶的母牛是 dry cow。牛犢是 calf。英語習語a bull in a china shop(闖進瓷器店的公牛)，指“笨手笨腳動輒闖禍的人”。

18世紀，蘇格蘭作家 John Arbuthnot寫了一本書，名叫The History of John　Bull，主人公叫做John Bull，用來代表英國。從此，John Bull成了英國和典型英國人的代名詞，漢語譯為“約翰牛”。

在西方古代文明中，牛象征力量、財富和希望。人們用bull market(牛市)表示股市上升之勢。bear market是“空頭市場”，譯為“熊市”。

西班牙斗牛(Spanish bullfight)是斗牛士(bullfighter, matador)在斗牛場(bullring)與公牛相斗。奔牛(Running of the Bulls)，也是西班牙的民間傳統活動。

漢語說“他工作像老黃牛。”英語要譯為He works like a horse。漢語說“他像牛一樣犟。”英語要譯為He is as stubborn as mule。但是漢語的“犟”，可以譯為bull-headed。例如：He is the most bull-headed person that I have ever met(他是我遇到過的最犟的人)。注意He is as dumb as an ox的意思不是“沉默寡語”，而是“笨拙愚蠢”。英語習語take the bull by the horns(牽牛抓住牛角)，指“勇于面對危險”。

“黃牛”或“黃牛黨”，與牛無關，指“票販子”，可以譯為 ticket tout或ticket scalper。▲
