1. Organic and Traditional Farming

Agricultural scientists in Switzerland have demonstrated(證明) the long-term effects of organic(有機的) farming methods. Organic farms use no man-made chemicals to increase crops or control insects and diseases. The study showed that organic fields produced fewer crops，on average，than other fields. However，the scientists say the organic methods improved the health of the soil and used half as much energy.

Two fields were grown using traditional farming methods. The others were grown using organic farming methods. The scientists grew potatoes，barley，winter wheat，beets and grass clover. The crops，planting methods，and soil use were similar in all the fields studied.

The study found that the organic fields produced about twenty percent fewer crops than the other fields. However，the farmers used less fertilizer and energy on the organic fields. They found the organic fields were healthier，

The scientists say the organic fields had more nutrients(營養成分) in the soil. The soil in the organic fields also had more biological activity than the other fields. The organic fields had more helpful organisms and a larger number of different organisms. The organic fields had almost two times as many insects，including helpful insects. In traditional farming，chemicals designed to kill harmful insects also can kill helpful ones.

The researchers say the findings show that organic crop production rates change little over time，and that soil fertility(肥沃) increases. They say the findings suggest that organic farmers can help the environment by increasing soil fertility.

2. Different Views on Seeing Doctor

Its really interesting to notice the differences between the east and the west. Maybe when you are with a foreign person，you may not understand what they are thinking about seeing the doctor and what they are thinking about your illness because the two cultures of the east and the west are sometimes different.

You know one of the things that I noticed after coming to China is，you know，in a Chinese situation. If you have a diarrhea(痢疾)，youll get different advice from what you will get in the west. And in China，if you have diarrhea，people would say to you，“Maybe you should eat some soup，some noodle soup and dont eat too much.” Or they give you some Chinese medicine really great called Huanglianisu. I dont know what it is in English. I dont think we have Huangliansu in the west.

But you see that its a wonderful stuff. We have something called peptobismal(止瀉藥). Thats a pink medicine that we often take for diarrhea. And then they will tell you what to eat. Western doctors are telling you what to eat when you have diarrhea.

When you feel like you might be able to start to eat food. We have what we called the BRAT Diet. And these are the easiest food for your stomach to be able to digest without contributing to your diarrhea. And the BRAT Diet is B-R-A-T Diet. B stands for bananas. The R is rice. A is applesauce(蘋果醬). And T is toast.
