Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes(運動員). Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.

The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents and coaches criticisms to heart and find a flaw (缺陷) in themselves.

Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In todays youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters performances. Positive reinforcement should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

1. An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is ____.

A. to reduce their mental stress

B. to make sports less competitive

C. to increase their sense of success

D. to make sports more challenging

2. According to the passage sport is positive for young people in that ____.

A. it can help them learn more about society

B. it enables them to find flaws in themselves

C. it can provide them with valuable experiences

D. it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves

3. According to the passage parents and coaches should ____.

A. pay more attention to letting children enjoy sports

B. help children to win every game

C. train children to cope with stress

D. enable children to understand the positive aspect of sports

4. The authors purpose in writing the passage is ____.

A. to teach young athletes how to avoid burnout

B. to persuade young children not to worry about criticism

C. to stress the importance of positive reinforcement to children

D. to discuss the skill of combining criticism with encouragement

(C)

I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago whose husband unexpectedly died of a heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insight with a classroom of students.

As the late afternoon sunlight came streaming in through the classroom windows and the class was nearly over, she moved a few things aside on the edge of her desk and sat down there. With a gentle look of reflection on her face, she paused and said, “Before class is over, I would like to share with all of you a thought that is unrelated to class, but which I felt very important. Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves. None of us knows when this fantastic experience will end. It can be taken away at any moment.”

Her eyes beginning to water, she went on:

“So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesnt have to be something you see, it could be a scent—perhaps of freshly baked bread wafting out of someones house, or it could be the sound of the breeze slightly rustling the leaves in the trees, or the way the morning light catches one autumn leaf as it falls gently to the ground…”

The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books and filed out of the room silently. That afternoon, I noticed more things on my way home from school than I had that whole semester…

Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour today. Go barefoot or walk on the beach at sunset. For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we often regret, but the things we didnt do.

1. What is the purpose of the author in writing the passage? ____.

A. To show his respect to his teacher

B. To ask us to appreciate every moment of our life

D. To show the influence a teacher can have on her students

2. Why did the teacher talk about something unrelated to class? ____.

A. Because she had finished the class task

B. Because she could hardly control her feeling

C. Because she thought the class were not thoughtful enough

D. Because she wanted to share some of her insight with the class

3. Why did the students file out of the room silently? ____.

A. Because they were greatly impressed by the teachers words

B. Because they were sympathetic with the teacher

C. Because they were thinking about their own life

D. Because they were not allowed to make any noise when school was over

(D)

In Britain and other countries, young people sometimes take a “gap year,” a year off between high school and college.

Charles Deacon, dean of admissions at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. says the most common reason is to have a chance to travel. But he says international students may take a gap year to meet requirements at home for military duty.

Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required education. But it can also give students a chance to explore their interests. Students who think they want to be doctors, for example, could learn about the profession by volunteering in a hospital for a year.

Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission. Experts say students can grow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy.

The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its Web site called “Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation.”It praises the idea of taking time off to step back, think and enjoy gaining life experiences outside the pressure of studies.

Of course, a gap year is not for everyone. Students might miss their friends who go on directly to college. And parents might worry that their children will decide not to go to college once they take time off.

Another concern is money. A year off, away from home, can be costly.

Holly Bull is the president of the Center for Interim Programs. Her company specializes in helping students plan their gap year. She notes that several books have been written about this subject. She says these books along with media attention and the availability of information on the Internet have increased interest in the idea of a year off.

And she points out that many gap-year programs cost far less than a year of college.

3. What does Holly Bull think of the idea of a “year gap”? ____.

A. It is not suitable for all students

B. It is beneficial for students

C. It does not have practical value

In some children who go blind, certain parts of the brain normally control vision appear to switch jobs and focus instead on sound, a new study has found.

The study, by researchers at the University of Montreal, involved 7 adults who could see and 12 adults who had lost their vision when they were children. Each participant sat in a room with 16 loudspeakers at different locations. The room was designed so that there were no echoes. During the experiment, the speakers irregularly produced sounds. Participants had to point to ____. Meanwhile, the researchers monitored blood flow in the brains of the participants to see which brain structures were working during the task.

The result showed that five of the blind participants were very good at pointing to where sounds were coming from. In these people, blood flow increased in the visual cortex—an area at the back of the right side of the brain. This part of the brain is usually associated with vision.

The other several blind participants showed no increase in activity in the visual cortex. These people didnt do very well in picking out where sounds were coming from. Now, the researchers are looking at whether these people have gained an enhanced sense of touch instead of sound to replace their lost vision.

The scientists say that their study shows how adaptable parts of the brain can be.
