Hes an old cobbler(修鞋匠) with a shop in the Marais a historic area in Paris. When I took him my shoes, he at first told me: “I havent time. Take them to the other fellow on the main street; hell fix them for you right away.”

But Id had my eye on his shop for a long time. Just looking at his bench loaded with tools and pieces of leather, I knew he was a skilled craftsman(手藝人). “No,” I replied, “the other fellow cant do it well.”

“The other fellow” was one of those shopkeepers who fix shoes and make keys “while-U-wait”—without knowing much about mending shoes or making keys. They work carelessly, and when they have finished sewing back a sandal strap(鞋帶) you might as well just throw away the pair.

My man saw I wouldnt give in, and he smiled. He wiped his hands on his blue apron(圍裙), looked at my shoes, had me write my name on one shoe with a piece of chalk and said, “Come back in a week.”

I was about to leave when he took a pair of soft leather boots off a shelf.

“See what I can do?” he said with pride, “Only three of us in Paris can do this kind of work.”

When I got back out into the street, the world seemed brand-new to me. He was something out of an ancient legend, this old craftsman with his way of speaking familiarly, his very strange, dusty felt hat, his funny accent from who-knows-where and, above all, his pride in his craft.

These are times when nothing is important but the bottom line, when you can do things any old way as long as it “pays”, when, in short, people look on work as a path to ever-increasing consumption (消費) rather than a way to realize their own abilities. In such a period it is a rare comfort to find a cobbler who gets his greatest satisfaction from pride in a job well done.

A recent study, published in last weeks Journal of the American Medical Association, offers a picture of how risky it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal accident as a teenager driving alone. By contrast, the risk of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional passenger.

The author also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased greatly after 10 pm, especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late-night accident.

Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with “really stupid behavior” than with just a lack of driving experience. “The basic problem,” he says, “is that adults who are responsible for licenses fail to recognize how complex and skilled a task driving is.”

Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to deal with the problem is to have states set up so called graduated (分等級的) licensing systems. A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove himself able to drive in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving with passenger restrictions at night, before graduating to full driving privileges.

Graduated licensing systems have reduced teenage driver crashes, according to recent studies, about half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place, but only 10 of those states have restrictions on passengers. California is the strictest, with a novice (新手) driver forbidden to carry any passenger under 20 (without the presence of an adult over 25 ) for the first six months.

If you think a Web site designed especially for complaining sounds unique, then think again. If you have a complaint, there are hundreds of sites that allow you to get it off your chest. Sites exist for complaining about such things as defective(有缺陷的) products, government inefficiency, and offensive advertising. It has been said that all Africans are born with musical talent. Because music is so important in the lives of many Africans and because so much music is performed in Africa, we probably think that all Africans are musicians. The impression is strengthened when we look at ourselves and find that we have become largely a society of musical spectators (觀眾). Music is important to us, but most of us can be considered consumers rather than producers of music. We have records, TV sets, concerts and radios to meet many of our musical needs. In most situations where music is performed in our culture its not difficult to tell the spectators from the performers, but such is not often the case in Africa. Alban Ayipapa, a Kasena musician from northern Ghana, says that when his flute and drum group is performing, “Anybody can take part.” This is true, but Kasena musicians recognize that not all people are equally able to take part in the music. Some can sing along with the drummers, but few can drum and even fewer can play the flute with the group. Its fairly common in Africa for there to be a group of expert musicians surrounded by others who join in by clapping, singing, or somehow adding to the totality of musical sound. Performances often take place in an open area (that is, not on a stage) and so the lines between the performing actors and the additional performers, active spectators and passive spectators may be difficult to draw from our point of view.

What should you think about in trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs(笨拙) when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background.
