Major league baseball revives a century-oldsport in China.
On the weekend of March 15, twoAmerican major league baseballteams met in Beijing for two ex-hibition games to show Chinesecrowds just how exciting America's favoritepastime can be. The San Diego Padres facedthe Los Angeles Dodgers, in front of a nearsellout crowd of 12,224 at the new Olympicvenue. Vendors plied the crowd with hotdogs, peanuts and—in a nod to local tastes—tea, and spectators gamely tried to sing alongto Take Me Out to the Ball Game. Nobodyseemed to mind that the game ended in aninconclusive tie.
