More than 30 stunningly beautiful photos of Tibet were on display for a whole week at the premises of the Malta China Freindship Society at 62 Christopher Street, Valletta, Malta.Liu Zhengxiu, Chinese ambassador to Malta, and Reno Calleja, president of the Malta China Friendship Society, opened the exhibition on February 10. More than 150 people from all walks of life from Malta attended the opening.
This selection of beautiful photos is part of thousands of photos that were taken last year by one hundred of the best photographers in the world. In 2005, the Information Office of the Tibet Autonomous Region in conjunction with the Information Office of the State Council and the Chinese Photographers’ Association invited 100 photographers from l9 countries to spend three weeks in Tibet.They were assigned to visit 100 different places in Tibet capturing the natural scenery, religious sights, cultural and decanal events, folk customs, and the way of life and pastimes of the Tibetan people, factories, enterprises and life in the villages.The photographers took no less than 150,000 photos in the cities of Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and Xigaze, and the prefectures of Shannan, Nyingchi and Nagqu.
A special panel of judges chose more than 700 best photos that had been taken by these 100 photographers.These photos were exhibited in July last year in Beijing, the capital city of China. The Exhibition called Tibet in the Eyes of 100 Photographers made an instant hit.It is now touring the world.
Mr Calleja said in his speech on the occasion of the opening that Malta was fortunate that through the Chinese Cultural Centre and the Chinese Embassy in Malta, 35 of these photos would be exhibited. The Malta China Friendship Society offered its spacious hall in its premises in Valletta to enable the public to see this exhibition.
