Vice Premier Huang Ju met with Mr. Timothy Donahue, chairman of Nextel Corporation in Beijing on February 26. Zhang Yesui, vice minister of foreign affairs and Li Xiaolin, vice president of the CPAFFC, were present at the meeting.
Huang Ju extended warm welcome to Donahue and expressed appreciation of Nextel’s contribution to promoting Sino-US economic cooperation and friendly ties as well as letting people of various circles in the U.S. know more about China. He hoped that the corporation would play a bigger role in this regard. Huang said that the prospect for the application of mobile telecommunication technology in China is very bright due to the huge size of the country. China’s telecommunication industry has enjoyed rapid development in recent years and still has vast potential for growth. By the end of last year, the number of mobile phone users has reached 334 million. Along with the rapid growth, the manufacturers, operators and service providers in China are actively expanding their business and cooperating with their international counterparts. He believed that Nextel senior managers’ visit would surely boost cooperation between the telecommunication companies of the two countries. Chinese government attaches great importance to the visit and encourages Fortune top 500 companies to cooperate with China’s IT industry, in particular, telecommunication industry.
Mr. Donahue stated that he was deeply impressed by China’s rapid economic development, technology application and investment in infrastructure. Nextel has been engaged in cooperation with Chinese companies for two years and has gained more knowledge about China’s telecommunication industry. He believed that China has great opportunity and potential in its wireless telecommunication development, especially in the development and optimization of CDMA technology. He hoped to cooperate and establish strategic partnership with Chinese companies who own CDMA in order to set up an optimized wireless telecommunication system in China as well as introducing the technology to other countries of the world.
