
At the invitation of Gaston Flosse, president of the Government of French Polynesia, a CPAFFC delegation headed by CPAFFC President Chen Haosu and Vice President Su Guang paid a goodwill visit to French Polynesia in September 2003. The Government of French Polynesia attached great importance to the visit. During their stay there, the delegation exchanged views with President Flosse many times on promoting friendship and cooperation between the Chinese and French Polynesian peoples. Both sides unanimously held that to promote friendship and strengthen cooperation are the common aspiration of the Chinese and French Polynesian people, which is conducive to the prosperity and development of the two sides and world peace. The delegation had extensive contacts with high-ranking officials and personages of various circles, and achieved its purpose of strengthening understanding, enhancing friendship and promoting cooperation.
On September 16 when the CPAFFC delegation arrived at the airport in Papeete, capital of French Polynesia, President Flosse together with other important high-ranking officials warmly welcomed Chen Haosu and his party at the boarding ramp. Young Tahiti men and women in their national costumes danced to the drumbeats, expressing their respect to the Chinese envoys of friendship. That evening President Flosse met with the delegation at the President's Residence. He said that his visit to China in October 2002 had left deep and good impressions on him and his delegation, and expressed his thanks to the CPAFFC for the warm and considerate reception. He said, China is a marvelous country and the Chinese nation is a great nation. We all look forward to visiting China again and further deepening the friendly and cooperative relations between the two sides. Without economic development, there will be no social development. He added, in the future the French Polynesian Government will lay stress of its policy on economic development, mainly developing pearl cultivation, tourism, harbour construction, fishery and perfume industry. French Polynesia attaches great importance to strengthening economic and trade exchanges and technological cooperation with China in the above-mentioned fields. Chen Haosu thanked President Flosse for his kind invitation and his expression of profound friendly sentiments for China and the Chinese people on behalf of the French Polynesian people. Chen said, the visit is aimed at enhancing friendship and cooperation and through knowing more about French Polynesia laying a solid foundation for future cooperation.

The delegation paid an official call on Jacques Michant, representative of the French High Commission. Michant expressed his welcome to Chen Haosu and his party, briefed about the high degree of autonomy of French Polynesia and the trend of further strengthening of the autonomy, the national characteristics and the trend of its economic policy in the future. France is willing to work together with China to promote the development of French Polynesia. Chen Haosu spoke highly of the friendly and cooperative relations between China and France, briefed about the CPAFFC's active participation in the activities of the China Culture Year and the France Culture Year held in France and China successively in 2003 and 2004 and expressed his sincere wish of further promoting cooperation between China and French Polynesia in line with the economic characteristics of French Polynesia.
On September 17, Mme. Lucette Taero, president of the Assembly of French Polynesia, held a banquet in honour of Chen Haosu and his party. Mme. Taero, in the name of the Assembly of French Polynesia, expressed her welcome to the delegation's visit. She said, since the beginning of the 21st century, French Polynesia and China have accelerated the development of their relations, which can be seen in the visit to French Polynesia by President Jiang Zemin in 2001, the return visit to China by President Flosse in 2002, and the visits to French Polynesia by Vice Premier Li Changchun and other important personages and the Chinese naval vessel. During her visit to China in 2002, she was accorded warm reception by the CPAFFC. The hospitality and friendship of the Chinese people and the great development of China left deep and good impressions on her and other members of the delegation. President Taero briefed about the Assembly's efforts to further improve tourist conditions and raise people's livelihood, expressed the Assembly's intention to support the government in strengthening cooperation with China, and asked Chen Haosu to convey French Polynesian people's respect and regards to the Chinese people.
On the evening of September 18, President Flosse held a banquet in honour of the delegation at the President's Residence. Mme. Lucette Taero, president of the Assembly of French Polynesia, Edouard Fritch, vice president of the government, ministers of fisheries, culture, education, housing, tourism and transportation, economy and finance, handicraft and mutual aid and cooperation, as well as Chinese French Polynesian and representatives of various circles attended the banquet. In his speech President Flosse reviewed the increase of exchanges between high-ranking officials of the two sides since President Jiang Zemin's visit to French Polynesia, expressed his admiration for prosperous China and the ingenious and industrious Chinese nation, and his wish of strengthening cooperation between the two sides in a pragmatic way.

In his speech, CPAFFC President Chen Haosu expressed his admiration for the prosperity of French Polynesia achieved under the leadership of President Flosse and his wishes of strengthening cooperation with China. Chen briefed about the Chinese people's goal after the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and China's foreign policy of opposing hegemonism, maintaining world peace and promoting common development. He wished the French Polynesian people to realize their ideal of building the territory into a paradise on earth in the South Pacific region as early as possible. Chen said, the CPAFFC is willing to make concerted efforts with the Government of French Polynesia to promote friendship and cooperation between China and French Polynesia. Chen also invited President Flosse to visit China again. Flosse asked Chen to convey his sincere greetings to President Jiang Zemin and other Chinese friends.
Accompanied by President Flosse and some ministers, the delegation visited Tahiti, Rangiroa, Moorea and Bora-Bora Islands, as well as ports, the TV station, a shipyard, a sewage treatment plant, a sea water desalination plant, a black pearl culture farm, a training base for technicians, the construction site of a tourist hotel on the sea, etc. During the visit, Chen Haosu was interviewed many times by reporters from the radio and TV stations and newspapers. In the interviews Chen briefed about how the Chinese people work hard in an innovative way and carry out reforms to realize the goal of building a well-off society in an all-round way, and also expressed the Chinese people's wish of strengthening friendship and cooperation to promote common development with the people of various countries in the world including the French Polynesian people.
The delegation also had talks with representatives of the organizations of the overseas Chinese and Chinese French Polynesian.
Before the conclusion of the visit, CPAFFC President Chen Haosu and President Flosse signed an agreement on cooperation between the CPAFFC and the Government of French Polynesia.
