YANG YICHOU

EDITORS NOTE: Russian Facts and Figures Weekly (issue No.18) reported that Russian scientists between August and October 1999 had found the worlds largest pyramid in the Kangrinboqe Peak in Tibet. They also claimed that they had found more than 100 such pyramids. Yang Yichou, a famous geologist in China who has determined the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon to be the worlds longest and deepest, said rejected the Russian claim during our interview.
QUESTION: Could you please say something about the news? YANG: Frankly speaking, the Russian news shocked Tibetan study workers and geologists who have visited that peak many, many times.Chang Chengfa, a noted geologist specialized in studying the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, was also stunned to learn of the alleged find. We discussed the matter with great seriousness and could find no signs to support the Russian claim.

QUESTIONS: Could it be possible that the Russian scientists mistook mountains as pyramids? YANG: In my view, they did take mountains as pyramids. In this sense, they are either harboring wild ambitions or have made a big mistake. There are two totally disparate elements: pyramids and pyramid-like structures. The latter are entirely natural, including pyramid-like sand dunes and pyramid-like peaks.
QUESTION: But the Russian scientists say they have discovered pyramids, instead of pyramid-like structures. They have even produced computer-processed photos to bolster their view. YANG: According to the Russian news, the scientists have found more than 100 giant pyramids and numerous relics of cultural interest around the Kangrinboqe Peak, with an elevation of 5,000 meters. These pyramids are between 100 and 1,800 meters high, compared to the largest pyramid in Egypt, which rises only 146 meters. The problem is that there has never been any reference in history to anything like that supposedly discovered by the Russian scientists. The geologist Mr. A. Gansser and explorer Sven Hedin made no mention of this when they visited Kangrinboqe Peak in the 1930s. And dozens of scientists who have been studying the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau for more than 50 years also have failed to notice anything unusual. An examination of the computer-processed photo of the pyramids shows that the front gate or window is actually an indented part of the rock. P Personally, I think what the Russian scientists have found is a pyramid-like environment composed of mountains. Around the Kangrinboqe Peak, there are many peaks in the shape of awls, squares and even tables. And the Kangrinboqe Peak itself is like a pyramid. For thousands of years, the locals came to worship the peak and held it to be holy. Many built lama dagobas and Mani stone mounds. They may look like "pyramids" but they are not!
